I loved the diverse cast in this one

Wow! I loved the diverse cast in this one! Full of humor and the full spectrum of kink, this enjoyable story is low angst and just the right amount of sweet and sassy! Be warned, this isn't just one love story, the plot focuses on 4 different couples and how they find each other and make BDSM work for them.

The Cage by Catt Ford is a wonderfully kinky, sexy and erotic story of a group of friends who find love, laugher and happiness.

Whilst the main characters are Ben and Lazar the story is very much about all of the characters that surround then. We have the fabulous and way over the top Miss Dre, a transvestite who oozes flamboyance and charm, I adored her. She’s also very much a top. Then we have Bran, the ‘straight’ sadist who just can’t find the right girl. And Max the quiet dour man who’s hiding a secret that defines him. And Otto and Sherman, engineers who are partners as well as work colleagues. Plus numerous others that filter in and out as the story flows.

The relationship between Ben and Lazar is new, plus Ben is a newbie to the scene as well. They met when Ben visited to help him with his website, he’s now his webmaster, so all Ben knows about the scene is what he sees and experiences with Lazar. Ben is quite a bit younger than Lazar and very beautiful but he doesn’t see himself like that and he doesn’t understand what Lazar sees in him, he’s just waiting for Lazar to get bored with him. Ben is aware that Lazar sees into his soul, laying bare everything he wants and that scares him, he’s frightened to open his heart, afraid that everything will come crashing down around him. Lazar is afraid too, he’s falling in love with Ben, he’s never been in love before and he’s scared of how vulnerable that makes him and that holds him back from admitting how he feels.

The beginning is quite erotic, but also a bit unsettling, a very kinky scene which seems a bit too intense until I later realized it was role play. Ben plays a young man who walks into The Cage, Lazar’s club, for the first time and ends up getting ravished by Lazar, with some help from Miss Dre. Ben likes to be watched, he’s an exhibitionist, it’s a kink he’s just beginning to come to turns with. From then on we follow Ben and Lazar as they grow closer together with a few hiccups along the way.

The story is full of one liners, it’s humorous and in places very funny, many times I had to stop myself from laughing out loud. The Kink/Product Evaluation Form was priceless, as was Satan’s Stinger! Ben creates the form for Otto and Sherman to fill out as they are testers for Lazar’s new products, he wants to use the information to update the site so that buyers get a proper evaluation of the products. As Ben and Lazar’s relationship grows Ben gets to understand the lifestyle and how he fits into it, getting advice and support along the way. I loved how honest Miss Dre was when she talked to Ben about her past and how everyone just sees a stereotype big bad black-woman but she’s more than that, and how everyone plays differently, every relationship is different and no one should ever be pigeonholed.

The Cage is a story of an ensemble of likeminded friends who are each other’s family, as close as any siblings could be. The group reminded me very much of the friends in Queer as Folk (the US version) and The Cage where the congregate resembled the café where they all met up each day.

Family can be much stronger than blood and this group of friends drawn together by lifestyle and experience shows that. My first introduction to BDSM was through Catt Fords A Strong Hand so as soon as I saw The Cage I grabbed it. It’s low on angst but high in kink and eroticism and I loved every page.

The Cage is the perfect place for them to talk freely and openly

The Cage is a store that sells BDSM fetish items and is owned by Lazar Thornton. It’s a place where he and his friends meet and talk. They also meet at a local diner, but as they’re all involved in the kinky lifestyle in one way or another, The Cage is the perfect place for them to talk freely and openly. Or not talk. Lazar’s boyfriend Ben is the newbie in the group and the newbie in the kinky lifestyle. The more Ben learns the more he begins to think Lazar is out of his league. While Ben and Lazar deal with their own romance Miss Dre, Otto, Sherm, Max, and Bran all deal with their romances and relationships and all deal with them in their own ways.

This book was an inter-weaving of five very different relationships. Each one exhibiting some form of BDSM lifestyle. They also ranged from reconciliation, established, closeted, nascent, and first date. As Ben learns more about the group of friends he learns more about various manifestations of kinky lifestyles as expressed by loving relationships. The reader is along for Ben’s education. That’s great for the reader if an education in kinky lifestyles is what you need. If you’re already a firm proponent that kink is what you make of it this book comes across as preaching to the choir. The characters were well developed and interesting, but the format didn’t allow for much depth in any of the relationships. What we did get was a montage of tableaux that beautifully showcased various couples in intimate and loving moments.

I had one serious issue with the book and it involved the character Bran. Despite not having a successful relationship with a woman, Bran maintains he’s heterosexual to the group of friends. Miss Dre does not accept this. The logic at work here is the same as people saying the love of a good woman can make a man straight, or sex with a real man can make a woman straight. Why can’t we just accept at face value what people say of their sexuality? The resolution to Bran’s story was nuanced and well written, but the lack of his acceptance from his gay friends was just as repugnant to me as the lack of acceptance from heterosexual friends and family of a gay person. I would like to stress Bran wasn’t forced or tricked into anything and his story was very nuanced.

There was no single event driving the story of this book. Like any character driven story this one was a bit of a risk. That we had six characters to follow made this one more risky. I don’t think it worked for me. I do like character driven stories, but I was unable to really become interested in any specific character as they were frequently changing and we didn’t get a good long look at the life of any of them. This was specifically about the sexual and emotional relationships of five couples. Not their lives as a whole, but just their relationship and how kink factored into it. I needed more of the men and who they were outside of kink.

At the same time. the search for understanding the antebellum black experience in the South usually has centered on slaves. In Free Blacks in Norfolk, Virginia, 1790-1860, Tommy L. Bogger portrays lives somewhere between slavery and freedom.

A free black community of skilled artisans and semi-skilled laborers emerged in Norfolk around 1800. Some free blacks earned the respect of leading white businessmen, and many enjoyed easy access to credit and steady employment. They showed no hesitation in suing recalcitrant debtors -- black or white -- and until 1805 they could count on the cooperation of court officials in helping them to collect. But from then on. free blacks experienced a steady decline in status that continued throughout the antebellum period. Legal restraints were placed on them at the same time that Norfolk's economy stagnated. and white immigrants arriving in the 1830s entered fields once monopolized by blacks. By the 1850s the free black community was sunk in hopelessness and despair.

Free Blacks in Norfolk, Virginia, 1790-1860 discusses the active roles that blacks played in creating their community, contradicting prevalent images of free blacks at the mercy of whites. While previous studies of Virginia's free blacks have focused on Richmond or Petersburg, developments in Norfolk's free black community also merit analysis. Norfolk also offers the advantage of a population large enough to provide a reliable data base yet small enough to preserve the stories of individual lives. Those interested in African-American history, Virginia history, orthe South in general will find this book a valuable new resource.

Second Time Around

Just when you think a topic is not worth pursuing, a little light bulb comes on that pushes one to take the next step. Free Blacks in Norfolk Virginia 1790-1860: The Darker Side of Freedom examines social history with respect to free slaves. Tommy L. Bogger offers a different kind of scholarship, which involves manumission, slaves paying their way to freedom. Bogger continues research on the issue of post-slavery before the Civil War that scholars neglected in the past. As the subtitle states, "The Darker Side of Freedom", is indeed a true fallacy that Bogger emphasizes throughout the book that involves remnants of enslavement and the lack of opportunity that remained prevalent for those who attempted to live and financially prosper in the city of Norfolk. Literally, they lived in the "shadows" from their white neighbors despite the fact that they were skilled and educated workers. Bogger goes through the evolution of change for Blacks in Norfolk from vibrant optimism to a sense of letdown. For the most part, they too experienced the economic woes that occurred in the city and the influx of European immigrants arriving in the United States who wanted to start a new life as well. Ironically, this dilemma eventually led them to flee the North or further to the South to pursue a better life where they could build and actively participate in communities of their own, which would also contribute to American society as a whole.

The concluding chapters presents much insight to the dwindling situation that Blacks experienced during the nineteenth century. Bogger shows how death and disillusionment took a toll amongst Blacks, and to add to their uncompromising situations, the Yellow Fever epidemic in 1855 occurred, which left thousands dead. However, what is so surprising is that less Blacks died from the disease because their access to free vaccinations.

Overall, Free Blacks in Norfolk is well researched and documented. Bogger takes much of his accounts from unbiased court documents, but it would have been more helpful if there were more authentic voices within his narrative.

Foundational Information

This text presents a wonderful foundation of information that summarizes and hits the main points of each of the basic topics pertinent to teaching ESL. It is an amazing resource for students who are just starting their study of ESL teaching and a great refresher/review for teachers who have been teaching for a while.

Speaking English isn't the same as teaching English!

I've spent many years in foreign countries- traveling, studying, working, living... I've even had an opportunity to teach English here and there, though I would not count myself a long term or "professional" English teacher. For the less initiated, this is a good type of book to start with. I read it as part of a short course on how to teach English to foreigners. The funny thing I learned from even that short experience was that being a native speaker of English, and I'd say a pretty articulate one at that, does not really "translate" into being able to teach the language to others! Teaching a language is its own skill, totally apart and separate from understanding and using it deftly. I was never quite able to justify a several thousand dollar TOEFL course or something like that as I didn't see myself doing a lot of English teaching. That would probably be a worthwhile investment for someone looking to really support themselves overseas (or for that matter, here in the US) teaching English to non-speakers. That said, from having traveled the world extensively for lengthy periods I would say that native English speakers always seem to be in fairly high demand, even without teaching experience. Being able to "self-educate" on how to teach English- using books like this and reference materials you could find online, etc., might be enough to jumpstart a mini-career in English teaching, or at least open the door enough to try it out and figure out if its your thing, if you want to invest more into it with a formal course and make it a career, etc. Also along those lines, it is much easier to teach advance students of English than beginners, as your classes will be more around conversation and correcting common mistakes made, etc., and not about teaching the basic grammatical building blocks of the language. The types of rules we native speakers learn in grade school and internalize, and notice instantly when something strikes our ear as "wrong", but don't necessarily "know" or remember the specific rules that are associated with them in order to teach them to others. If you are thinking about dipping your toe in the English teaching market, read a few books like this one, talk to people who have done it, take a class if you have the time/can afford it, avail yourself of all of the free online materials, and then just give it a shot! Maybe you can find a local place to tutor foreigners here in the States before taking off on an extended trip abroad where you might be looking to supplement your income/defray travel expenses by teaching English. Your confidence will expand by leaps and bounds with a little bit of real world experience, and soon you'll realize that you can take on your own students and plan lessons, etc., especially for the (perhaps counter-intuitively) easier students, who are the more advanced ones. Easy to read, but lacking...

The Cairo House is a nice easy to read book. Unlike the several other excellent Arab American autobiographies published over the last few years, Cairo House falls short in offering balanced look at the author's life story, identity and life across three continents.
Cairo House comes across short in intellectual maturity with minimal retrospective analysis of events and relationships. Glimpses of the maturity and honesty come across in the later phases of the book, but much of the earlier phases are full of cardboard like characters.
Most disturbing for an Arab American is the author failure to move beyond colonial era thinking and rhetoric. Serageldin's attempt at defending Egypt's ruling classes of 30's and 40's is weak, thousands of miles away and several decades do not seem to have open her eyes to the failure of Egypt's elite to move beyond resisting British occupation to building a modern democratic society with some form of upward mobility.
The Cairo House however is entertaining, full of interesting tidbits about Egypt and does occasionally shed some light on Serageldin's confusion and loss of identity in an interesting and personable fashion.
For me Leila Ahmed's Border Passage, another autobiography of an Egyptian American woman of privileged upbringing is a masterpiece. In the Eye of the Sun by Ahdaf Souif, an Egyptian British woman is another masterpiece in semi fictional work. Nadia, Captive of Hope by Fay Afaf Kanfani is also an excellent work by an Arab American woman and so is Out of Place by Edward Said. Perhaps it takes more than 10 years away to gain enough maturity to be able to offer a true thought provoking autobiography that examines issues of identity and the struggle of belonging as well as a true look at one's own family, shortcomings and indeed life

Avoids the easy way out...

The Cairo House seems simultaneously, at various junctures in the text, like several types of genres of American writing, fictional or otherwise: The "Roots" book in which the writer explains the backgound of her family and just who they were before they became faceless identity-less, consuming individuals in the U.S., the "feminist" book about how a woman from an affluent background "finds herself" after a identity-less upbringing, a personality-surpressing early adulthood, and an unhappy first marriage, and finally, her ancedotal observations on the upheavals in Egypt over the period of her early life when her family's uncontested political hegimony in Egypt was underminded and often outrightly persecuted. Reading the Cairo House adds a certain diversity of understanding to the Gamal Abd Nasir period. The book animates the fall of her family during that time and the fact that no one in her old elite family had anything but antipathy for his rule.

None of the conundrums which characterize her life are ever resolved to the point of catharsis in the book. She never finds the perfect man, she never resolves the relationship between her country-of-immigration, the United States and the Egypt of her pampered childhood. She doesn't "find herself" by divorcing her second husband or ever find the perfect marriage. Also the question of Egypt and how it has changed since her childhood is not addressed with some sort of agenda-driven political conclusion.

I kept expecting Gihan's life in the novel to come to some sort of smug conclusion or resolution but it never does. In this way the novel's protanginist never finds "the truth," her truth, or any truth at all. Her life stumbled along until she married a certain individual and also found herself living in a certain place and none of it has any sort of trancendent meaning. The son she left behind in Egypt is never reunited with her either. He never becomes close to her, to the character's disconcernment.

Thus, the Cairo House is an honest book about her family's political fall from grace, her upbringing as a girl in a privileged family, and then her later marriages and immigration. It is an honest book about Egypt too, because it offers no ideological "take" on the political events which occured there.

A Beautiful Story of Three Cultures

The story of Gihan (Gigi), the daughter of a well-to-do Egyptian family, brings to life the richness, complexities and perplexities of leaving one's birth culture to live in foreign lands. It is upon her return to Cairo as an adult that Gigi begins telling her life in snapshot flashbacks. Through these portraits, the reader pieces together her happy life as a little girl, the less-happy changes that come under Nasser, and her two marriages -- the first to Egyptian Yussef, the second to frenchman Luc -- that take her from Egypt to England to France and finally to the United States. Throughout her narrative, Gigi moves easily from one culture to another, all too easily in a way, since her return to Cairo prompts her to reexamine her life and to wonder whether she hasn't just drifted along without much resistance. Her one possible true love from her childhood, Tamer, reproaches her precisely for being too dutiful, too ready to do what was expected of her. In the end, she does not seize the possibility of his love but continues to do what is expected of her, to move downstream like a leaf borne along by the water.
Beautifully written, haunting and evocative, THE CAIRO HOUSE is a fictional treatment of recent Egyptian history and cultural change in Egyptian life as well as a bittersweet reflection on the ability to feel comfortable in many cultures but at home in none. Serageldin's command of the cultural and linguistic layers of her narrative is masterful. The passages of transition -- the coming and going in the international airport -- ring particularly true. A rewarding read.

In 1931, when the Nashville Banner conducted a survey to determine the "Greatest Tennesseans" to date, the state's Confederate "War Governor," Isham G. Harris (1818--1897), ranked tenth on the list, behind such famous Tennesseans as Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Andrew Johnson, and Nathan Bedford Forrest. In 1976, however, when the Banner once again conducted the survey, Harris did not appear in even the top twenty-five. The result of fading memories and the death of the generation that knew him, the glaring omission of Harris's name still seemed striking and undeserved. In Isham G. Harris of Tennessee, Sam Davis Elliott offers the first published biography of this overlooked leader, establishing him as the most prominent Tennessean in the Confederacy and a dominating participant in nineteenth-century Tennessee politics.

Harris grew up on the frontier in Middle Tennessee, the youngest in a large family. He left home as a teenager, and found and lost a fortune in the boom and bust times of the 1830s in Mississippi and West Tennessee. Admitted to the bar in 1841, he enjoyed almost immediate success as an attorney due to his quick intellect, aggressive nature, and native ability to influence people. He launched a political career in 1847 that lasted, with some interruption, for fifty years, during which he never lost an election. Harris rose to prominence in the 1850s as the leader of the Southern rights wing of the Democratic Party, fiercely advocating the right to hold property in slaves. He served in the Tennessee state Senate, as a U.S. congressman, and as governor during the secession crisis, when, Elliott contends, Harris used his political influence and constitutional power to trample on the state constitution to align Tennessee with the Confederacy.

As governor, Harris tirelessly dedicated himself to the Confederate war effort, raising troops and money and establishing a logistical structure and armament industry. When the Federals overran large portions of Middle and West Tennessee in 1862, he attached himself to the headquarters of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. As a volunteer aide, he served each of the army's commanders on nearly every one of its famed battlefields and was deemed a possible successor to Jefferson Davis should the new republic survive.

After the war, Harris went into voluntary exile in Mexico. He returned home in late 1867 and worked behind the scenes to "redeem" Tennessee from Radical rule, eventually becoming the most famous of the state's Bourbon Democrats. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1877, he held that seat until his death in 1897. He successfully used the Senate's arcane parliamentary rules to block assertions of Federal power at the expense of states' rights, but advocated imaginative application of Federal power where clearly authorized by the Constitution.

The story of nineteenth-century Tennessee remains incomplete without a thorough understanding of Isham Green Harris. Elliott's exhaustive and entertaining biography provides essential reading for anyone interested in the political and military history of the Volunteer State.

A unique guidebook for moms to be...wonderful!

Wow...how I wish I had this book in my days of having children (we won't say when those were!) This book helps pregnant women to take cahype of themselves and prepare for their child's birth physically, emotionally and spiritually. It not only has words of advice, education and encouragement, but various kinds of activities that can be done. Especially good for those women who appreciate the natural, engage in yoga beyond the exercises themselves and those planning a home or birthing center birth (not that it isn't good for that, too). It is written by a doula (if you don't know what this is, it's basically a mother's helper, not a midwife, and is their before/during/after birth to support the mother how she needs) giving the book a different viewpoint than most. The New Go-to Guide for Pregnancy!

This book is fantastic!!! I bought it for my cousin who just became pregnant and it will be my go-to gift for all my expectant friends and family. If you can't have Lori by your side during your pregnancy, then this book is the next best thing. It is a all-encompassing book that will help any expecting mom feel grounded, connected to her baby and lay the foundation for a healthy pregnancy. I love the recipe for Lori's LaborAde, the easy-to-follow checklists, diagrams for prenatal yoga poses and tips for eating healthy on a budget, plus anything else you would need to know but not the typical info you find in other pregnancy books!

I have first hand experienced working with Lori as my doula and I can't recommend her enough! Her book is full of wonderful tips and advice for the mom to be. As a new mom I had no idea what to expect and Lori was a wealth of knowledge, love and resources.
