Very sound. Ellington has apparently updated his concepts of HIT, but the basics are here. Very easy to read as it is about 40 chapters and each are 2-4 pages long. Verrrry easy and quick read, and will not bore.

Program Balances Diet with Strength Training

Months ago, a close friend, who had recently put on some muscle and lost a bit of weight, after hearing Ellington Darden speak at a business seminar, gave me a copy of Ellington Darden's Living Longer Stronger. I read the book and put it aside. A few weeks later, I talked with a favorite university professor who had always been plagued with weight problems, and the subject came up again. He mentioned the success he had using Darden's program.
Over the years, I tried lots of popular diets, aerobic exercises, and strength training in various combinations and taken to various extremes. They all worked to one degree or another, sometimes for only a while, but ultimately fatigue and a back injury from overdoing them had left me resigned to being grossly out of shape. A trip to the emergency room and surgery shook me up and I decided, once again, to shape up.
I hoped Darden's program, which claimed it was possible to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, would work for me. I was skeptical, but desperate to try. I did have the assurance that both a scientific friend and a former college professor found this program truly helpful.
The program in Living Longer Stronger relies on moderation of all things, except drinking icy cold water: a gallon and a half a day. Calorie intake is reduced over six weeks, gradually but never drops below 1300 per day to prevent the body from conserving fat. Strength training increases gradually from 6 to 10 exercises every three days. Darden explains that two days of rest in between is necessary for muscles to go beyond recovery and increase in strength. He also recommends getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night.
I just completed six weeks of the Living Longer Stronger program, and will begin the cycle of calorie cutting again in a week or two. I followed Darden's nutrition guidelines, but ignored the specific foods listed in his meal plans. (I like cooking and couldn't bring myself to eat canned potatoes, bottled low-cal salad dressing, margarine or Sarah Lee's so-called bagels, but that wouldn't be a problem for a lot of guys.) I walked for half an hour after dinner, when I could. I trained on a friend's Bowflex every three days without exception. I drank ice water all day. A new body fat sensing electronic scale - a tool that wasn't available when Darden wrote this book-- made it easy to chart fat loss. In six weeks, I lost 45 pounds of fat, and put on 5 pounds of muscle. My waste is 5 inches smaller. I can even see some muscle definition on my shoulders. There are no stretch marks anywhere. After a week or two continuing to training and to drink lots and lots of ice water, I will ready to do another six week cycle of stress free weight loss.
The program is written for men over 40, but the book features at least one example of a man in his 20s who used the program with great success.

Works for a 20 something too!

I applied about half the principles in the book (I didn't follow the eating/drinking water guidelines exactly, but I did do the exercising as described). I reduced my caloric intake, but not as much as he prescribes.

Basically, over the course of a year and half I went from 193 lbs. to 150 lbs. I am 5'7", and that was really noticeable. I would guess that I put on 7 or 8 lbs. of muscle during that time, so that's 50 lbs. of fat lost. I never thought when I started that I would have those kind of results.

I applied his principles not just over a 6 week period, but more or less made a lifestyle change. It's now been almost 2 years since I started his program, and I'm motivated to lose the last bit of fat off my body and pack on some serious muscle (buying another Darden book for that -- HIT training).

I was recommended this book by a friend who I watched follow the program to the letter and lose 50 lbs. in 6 months. I am here to tell you that if you have the discipline, you can absolutely do it. The best part is, after you read this book and learn the principles, you'll laugh at infomercials for ab machines and diet pills. There is no free lunch in serious (healthy) weight loss, but if you're willing to pay for it (unwavering determination), you can get there, no doubt.

Highly recommended. I bought one for my friend.

A must have for any Project Manager

The PRINCE2 2009 release has kept up with the times and PM improvements and once again is... brilliant!! Areas such as the principles, focusing on benefits (business case), governance, quality, process, roles and responsibilities are practically and cohesively presented. Also the consistent format and approach of the OGC methods (Managing Successful Programmes (Office of Government Commerce), Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices: P3O (P30), Management of Risk: Guidance for Practitioners (Office of Government Commerce)and now PRINCE2 2009 and Mop Management of Portfolios) is helpful and well integrated. The challenge, however, with less senior project managers is they are uncomfortable with any governance or assurance on their projects or deliverables which PRINCE2 incorporates. They also immediately presume PRINCE2 is an administrative, process heavy, bureaucratic framework... which is a common misconception as it is designed to be tailorable and throughout recommends "common sense"...

For project managers who have been brought up by PMI and PMBOK and who want to write the exams, I strongly recommend taking the course. There are noticeable "philosophical" differences that are best worked through and understood in a classroom environment to truely understand PRINCE2. That said, PMBOK and PRINCE2 are completely complementary and strongly benefit each other, as each improves on the ommissions / weak areas of the other. Keep in mind there is a strong relationship between the course and the PRINCE2 manual. The manual is designed to help practitioners through the exams, though obviously it is also an invaluable reference manual as well. Also, for practitioners that have passed the course and exam, I would also recommend either the online or PDF version as it is nice to have the information, graphics and templates available in electronic format.

Practical learning tool

Music Minus One works great for intonation practice and seriously increases the fun of practicing these etudes. There are two peculiar things though. The recordings are tuned at concert A 338 hertz which in our age is a strange choice to say the least, but might have been done for authenticity's sake. The second peculiarity is that the demo-versions of the pieces performed with bass and piano are generally slower than the recordings with just piano accompaniment.

For this reason it almost seems mandatory to have a programm that can slow down the music. I personally ripped the CD's and slow the music down with Transcribe! 8.0 for practice purposes. This way I can also loop a section that I want to practice more thoroughly. The accompaniment is set at the tempo's described above the etudes though. O, yes there are a few printmistakes in the notes which is a drag, but they don't seem to appear on the recording.

Well, apart from that it's a great practice-tool and the etudes are great for every beginning bassist, but also for say more advanced jazz-players that want to improve intonation and bowing-technique.

The Simandl Etudes are famous. This collection makes it better because it contains CDs with performances of the pieces by a good bass player and then CDs with just the piano accompaniment which are valuable for working on intonation, not to mention tempo and rhythm.

Excellent quality transcriptions and high quality recordings make this an impressive addition to a double bass library. These are great warmup pieces and also help to keep your chops in shape.

About the Author
Judy Aulette is a professor of sociology and women's studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she has been teaching sociology of families for 22 years. She is also an adjunct at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town South Africa where she teaches courses in family in the Social Work Programme. Her research is in the area of gender, families, and social movements. Most recently she is conducting evaluation research of HIV education for the National AIDS Foundation. In addition to the Pearson text Changing American Families, which is in its 3rd edition, she has written books on the sociology of gender and African women. Professor Aulette has been the recipient of two teaching and research Fulbrights to Poland and South Africa. She has also taught in Scotland and England. Professor Aulette identifies herself as a scholar activist and along with her work in academia has been involved in community organization around poverty, labor issues, and women's rights.

Lots of errors

For a college level textbook this thing really has a lot of mistakes... looks like they just relied on auto spell check instead of an actual editorial review. Unacceptable in this type of book. It was at times physically painful to read. Yeah yeah I'm being the grammar police but hey it's not a facebook post it's a college text so I think we should be able to expect a certain level of professionalism in the writing. Some interesting information although no real originality of thought and seems quite basic in content.

I want to thank the company for delivering the book on time, but it had to much high-lighting in it, to be sold for the price they were asking. It was worn way past "Like New" advertisement they posted.

About the Author
Ana C. Jarvis, a native of Paraguay, was born in Asuncion and attended school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She received her Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, in 1973. Dr. Jarvis retired from Chandler-Gilbert Community College after a long and distinguished career. Prior to CGCC, she taught at Mesa Community College; the University of California, Riverside; San Bernardino Valley College; Brigham Young University; and Riverside City College. In addition to authoring numerous Spanish textbooks, she has published several short stories in Spanish. In 1988, she was chosen as "Faculty Member of the Year" at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Raquel Lebredo was born in Camaguey, Cuba. She attended school in Havana and later enrolled at the University of Havana, where she received a Ph.D. in Education. She was subsequently employed as an elementary school principal, and taught literature and language at a preparatory school in Havana. She moved to the United States after living in Spain for a period of time. Dr. Lebredo was awarded a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside. Since then, she has taught Spanish at Claremont Graduate School, Crafton Hills College, the University of Redlands, and California Baptist University, and has authored several Spanish textbooks. In 1985, she was chosen as "Faculty Member of the Year" by the student body at California Baptist University, and in 1991 she received a YWCA "Women of Achievement" award.

Francisco Mena-Ayllon, a native of Madrid, Spain, received his Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, in 1973. He has taught Spanish language and literature courses at the University of California, Riverside; Oberlin College; California State University, Chico; the University of Redlands; and Crafton Hills College. In addition to authoring numerous Spanish textbooks in the United States, he has published a book about Federico Garcia Lorca and several volumes of his own poetry. His poetry has been published in Spain, Latin America, and the United States. His work has also been included in several anthologies of contemporary Spanish poets, and he is listed in Quien es Quien en las Letras Espanolas, 1978 (Who's Who in Spanish Letters), as an important contributor to contemporary Spanish literature. Professor Mena-Ayllon is now retired.
