About the Author
Armando Fox is a Professor at UC Berkeley, the faculty advisor to the UC Berkeley MOOCLab, and the winner of the 2015 Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator award from the Association for Computing Machinery. During his previous time at Stanford, he received teaching and mentoring awards from the Associated Students of Stanford University, the Society of Women Engineers, and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. He was named one of the "Scientific American 50" in 2003 and is the recipient of an NSF CAREER award and the Gilbreth Lectureship of the National Academy of Engineering. In previous lives he helped design the Intel Pentium Pro microprocessor and founded a successful startup to commercialize his UC Berkeley dissertation research on mobile computing. He received his other degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT and the University of Illinois and is an ACM Distinguished Member. David Patterson is the Pardee Professor of Computer Science at UC Berkeley and is currently Director of the Parallel Computing Lab. In the past, he served as Chair of Berkeley's CS Division, Chair of the CRA, and President of the ACM. His best-known research projects are Reduced Instruction Set Computers (RISC), Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks (RAID), and Network of Workstations (NOW). This research led to many papers, 5 books, and about 30 of honors, including election to the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame, and Fellow of the Computer History Museum. His teaching awards include the Distinguished Teaching Award (UC Berkeley), the Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award (ACM), the Mulligan Education Medal (IEEE), and the Undergraduate Teaching Award (IEEE). He received all his degrees from UCLA.

Drawing on archival sources the high politics and intelligence surrounding the introduction of internment are considered and in doing so accepted narratives regarding the measure are challenged. It is established that the quality of intelligence on both republican and loyalist paramilitaries was of a much better quality than previously thought. The book also highlights long-term and short-term consequences which developed from the internment period; some of which have not been given adequate consideration before. In addition this book traces the evolution of 'The Troubles' outside of Belfast and Derry/Londonderry between 1970 and 1972. A minute reconstruction of events from the newspapers of four provincial towns Lurgan, Dungannon, Newry and Enniskillen is provided. In doing so it is argued that the development of the dynamics of the conflict across the whole of Northern Ireland was certainly more gradual and possibly less inevitable than has been previously identified.

This text will be essential reading for academics and students of British and Irish political History, and those with an interest in counter-terrorism.

Edward Baptist makes several strong arguments, some of which turn conventional wisdom on its head. Some of his arguments are difficult to read and go against our preferred versions of U.S.history.

He details how American slavery was one of the most productive economic institutions in world history and how the expansion of slavery made the U.S. into a modern industrial empire. He details how slavery, by use of torture and terrorism, increased productivity and made the cotton industry the biggest, most sustained, expansion of the economy in human history.

He makes the point that it wasn't just a Southern industry; indeed it benefitted the entire world -- from Northern banks, ship builders and industries that supported slavery (farm implements, whips, ropes, chains, etc) to the textile mills of Western Europe, especially Britain.

And he makes a good argument that slavery would not have died if it hadn't been for the Civil War. Indeed, from the founding of the nation, slavery had grown for 70 years at a rate unprecedented in human history. There's no evidence to suggest that such a profitable and productive industry would have ever died out on its own accord. He shows that the cotton industry was never as productive again, after it lost it's use of the whip.

Finally, he points out that the South brought about their own destruction. It was they that always pushed for more and more expansion of slavery (even contemplating taking over Cuba and all of Mexico!), which pushed Northerners into fearing for their own loss of political power. The Southern push for ever-growing slavery culminated in the creation of the new Republican Party, formed to not end slavery but to end it's expansion. The South then went to war in order to create its own government based on slavery. Thankfully, they were destroyed.

It's a very well written book that not only makes his arguments with well researched historical documents. He also adds powerful voice to the millions of men, women and children who suffered under the bondage of slavery.

Gripping and haunting

This is a five-star book for me not because, as the mouseover bubble read, "I love it!" but because it opened my eyes and because it haunts me. Baptist does a brilliant job at revealing the societally sociopathic links between "driving GDP" and "boosting individual productivity" through creative, innovative cruelty. The whole Western world is implicated. Did your forebears wear cotton clothing? Then they benefited from the monstrous, profit-driven cruelty that made cotton the number one industrial material in the world and the U.S. the most powerful and wealthiest nation in the world. Many times I had to set this book down and take a break from it, even though it was gripping reading. Any American who believes that he or she is miraculously innocent of any complicity in the violent, persistent, systemic racism in our society is being willfully blind. This research should guide our teaching of American history for decades to come.

Baptist's work is significant if only because he carefully and dispassionately details the intricacies of the economic slave trade vis a vis the industries (including cotton) it made possible, the ubiquity of physical and sexual abuse and exploitation, the systematic and deliberate destruction of family, language and community. Moreover, he echoes the call of black intellectuals like me for a re-examination of the language associated with the trade. It's a dense, but vivid tome, and I learned a lot.

About the Author
Maram al-Masri is from Lattakia in Syria, now settled in Paris. She studied English Literature at Damascus University before starting publishing her poetry in Arab magazines in the 1970s. Today she is considered one of the most renowned and captivating feminine voices of her generation. Besides numerous poems published in literary journals, in several Arab anthologies and in various international anthologies, she has published several collections of poems. Thus far her work has been translated into eight languages. Maram al-Masri has participated in many international festivals of poetry in France and abroad. She has been awarded the "Adonis Prize" of the Lebanese Cultural Forum for the best creative work in Arabic in 1998, the "Premio Citta di Calopezzati" for the section "Poesie de la Mediterranee" and the "Prix d'Automne 2007" of the Societe des gens de letters. Her poetry collections include "Karra humra' ala bilat abyad" (Red Cherry on the White Floor) and "Undhur Ilayk" (I look at you).

Sali Hughes may come off as prim and proper, but her writing is imbued with dark, sardonic wit. It's not difficult to spot, and you can tell each word, piece of advice, and product endorsement comes from an authentic place.

When or if you're obsessed with cosmetics and parfums, then you'll have found your best friend in Miss Hughes.

The book covers EVERYTHING related to beauty and wellness.

Great Quick Read

I enjoyed reading this book and the fact that it was straight forward. While I did disagree with a few things she mentioned overall I did enjoy the information she provided. I fell though that if you know a lot about skin care or can do your own research then this book is not for you. However, if you are just starting out and want to really understand what you need to do then this book is a great place to start but remember your skin and its needs might be different than what she suggests or anyone suggests. Only you know your skin the best.

Beauty for Everyone

How can I begin to say how much I love this book? Sali Hughes is intelligent, inclusive, kind, positive, and no nonsense. She cuts through the bulls*** of the beauty/cosmetics industry with good (British*) humor. She knows her readers are beautiful, and she sees cosmetics as a way to evince our beauty. The focus here is on face makeup, but there are also interesting forays into scents, hair, nails, and a little bit of body products (e.g. self tanners). She includes makeup recommendations for women of color, which I appreciate as an Indian woman.

This book is not like most beauty books in that there are very few photos and certainly no detailed tutorials and diagrams. It is more like a book of beauty philosophy that also contains much practical advice. I was impressed by how well written it is! It is apparent that Sali took incredible care to be accurate and articulate. Highly recommended.

*Although I yearn for an American edition of this book--it would be great to know which American only products Sali would recommend--I know there is no way her characteristically British humor and slang could be translated.
