Just ok - not enough repetition of concepts

I have bought many math workbooks over the years, and this one has some definite benefits and drawbacks. It was purchased for two students, one entering 8th grade and one entering 9th grade. Both were going into the same advanced geometry class in HS, so this was intended to prepare them for the class with an introduction to geometry.

Pros: has great step-by-step solutions for the problems
covers a lot of topics under the geometry umbrella
uses proofs in a step-by-step way that helps proofs "make sense"

Cons: There is not much repetition - it is more like taking the example problems from each section of a textbook and putting them all in a row, so it is not ideal for the repetition a student would need to really master a new concept; I had to print off worksheets from the internet to provide enough practice on some concepts
Solutions and answers are provided immediately after the problem, so with kids who are less likely to really try to figure out what they did wrong, they often said, "Oh, I see..." and went on instead of figuring out what they didn't understand

Overall, I thought this was a very informative book, and a great review for mom, who hasn't done much with Geometry since graduating from HS, but it was not great for students who need a lot of practice on any given concept to really understand it. Having said that, they are now both 4 months into the geometry class at school, and have gone back to notes we took as we worked through the workbook to clarify topics they haven't understood at school, but they remember touching on over the summer. So, I guess it did some good. :)

Useful in addition to a text book.

I'm a private tutor and am using this with high school geometry students who need a few more problems in a specific area. It is much easier than looking them up on the internet, and sometimes I just have my phone with me and not good reception... so I like the book. The casual format is (I think) designed to make it more approachable (it is designed so it looks like someone hand-wrote the answers). I find it easy to read, but I'm not as keen on the angled comments... not using it between me and a student where I have to angle the book so we both can read it. For a single user (student working alone) it would not be a problem.

I bought this book because of the great reviews. I was disappointed. It is not any different from other guide books on geometry, unless students really find it easier to learn a subject whenever there are side notes. The explanations are not clear and the reasoning for a certain way of solving a problem is not explained. I also have to agree with other reviewers that the problems are on the easy side, even for a first course in geometry at the middle school/high school level.

About the Author
Dr. Rick Harrington has been a faculty member at the University of Houston, Victoria (UHV), since 1987. His specialty areas include health psychology/behavioral medicine and social psychology. He obtained his doctorate in social psychology and psychophysiology from the University of Texas at Arlington and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in behavioral medicine/social psychology at the University of Houston. Dr. Harrington is a licensed psychologist who received his licensing supervision at Houston's Methodist Hospital's Institute for Preventive Medicine. He practiced psychology in Houston at the Methodist Hospital, in private practice, and also worked as a Research Associate for the Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Harrington has been teaching at the college level for over 25 years and is a past recipient of UHV's Teaching Excellence Award. He has also been honored by "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" (1996, 2007) as one of the "best teachers in America selected by the best students." Dr. Harrington initiated the UHV Psi Chi chapter and is a former president of the Victoria Area Psychological Association. His research endeavors have included work in biofeedback, smoking cessation, personality, and life satisfaction.

A Must Read Whether You're in College or Not

As a psychology major with extreme stress issues, this textbook for my final class for the degree was excellent. It's insightful, helpful, and best of all? Easy to read and understand. The book give practical suggestions on how to reduce stress and explains why stress is such a huge issue in terms of overall health; mental, physical, and emotional.

I bought this book because it was required for my Psychology of Stress course and I found the material very easy to read and digest. Sometimes textbooks can be all over the place but this textbook had my reading it at easy and allowing the information sink in without much hassle. Really a stress free book!

Interesting Book.

This book is not what you might expect from a typical digital electronics book. It doesn't discuss how to design an instruction set or how to make a counter out of flip flops, Instead it focuses on the authors design process and it uses the well known Z80 as an example. The code listings are not complete and the writing is somewhat tedious. I wouldn't classify it as a how to book. More of an insight into the way an experienced designed approaches the problem of designing a CPU. There are no implementation details so if you somehow manage to actually design a CPU from the information presented here, you will have to code the implementation yourself. I was somewhat perplexed by the book at first but I can see how it might be useful to help sort out your thought processes as you approach a design. I rated the book 4 stars but I don't feel I am qualified to rate the book at all. I just wanted to explain what you are getting as best I could. I took off one star because the writing style is somewhat tedious and the fact that the title is not enough to go by. They need to do a search inside or something.

I hope that Louise Kay will do another Affirmation journal like this again. If you are really struggling to find something good about your day I'd recommend this as they were uplifting. I started this Day 1: Jan. 1, 2009 Her affirmation was: "I open myself to new ideas and new happiness. Each affirmation brought a new look for sure. Day 2: "I trust my Higher Self. I listen with love to my own inner voice. I release all that is unlike the action of love".
I wish I would have bought a couple when I ordered this when it first came out so I could have one for how I was changing during this year. I was struggling with many things in my life. The affirmations written on each page helped me to reflect on life and where I wanted to go. In many ways each brought me closer to that happiness I was looking for.
I would truly recommend this to anyone needing a way to have a daily affirmation and commitment to write their inner most thoughts for the first 30 days of that hardest time in there new walk of acceptance and seeking inner self. This changed my life immensely.
Thank you Louise Hay for this opportunity to do some true sole searching. It was a great start and a beginning of truth.

This is the perfect book for my thoughts and ideas. The product is well made and designed, it is hard cover and the illustrations are both uplifting and calming. The pages that you write on are clean and crisp and each new page has a thoughtful and thought provoking idea printed at the top. You can also date your entries in an uncluttered manner. My words will be kept for many years to come and I will pass this book of my wisdom to my children. Great buy!
