Humility is the gateway to learning. Prepare to be humbled, and learn! This guide for "complete idiots" wrestles with ancient truths of complicated historical twists and abstract metaphors, then jumps back in the ring for a match with modern physical and matematical theory. The result is a respectable triumph of simplicity without condescention, thoroughness without over complication, and readability in spite of rigor. Philosophy and practical application combine to help the reader onto solid ground in this poorly understood (to Western minds)ancient Eastern practice.

Excellent Version of the I Ching

This book is definitely a worthwhile edition of the I Ching for anyone interested in the subject matter. Over the years I have collected numerous versions of the I Ching, and this one is probably the most readable of the lot of them.
The background history of the I Ching is well researched and presented, and the chapters relating it to Chaos Theory, the Holographic Paradigm, and others are extremely interesting and valuable reading.
The heart of the book is, of course, the presentations of the hexagrams. While not as "in-depth" as some of my other translations/interpretations, this isn't necessarily a bad thing - many of those other books give you enough information to thoroughly overwhelm you. The interpretations here are written in modern English, and are very understandable. What makes them truly useful, however, is the way the author relates the meanings of the hexagrams to the history of the political situations occuring when the book was put together in its "modern" form (during the time of King Wen and the Duke of Zhou). This makes the hexagrams MUCH easier to relate to your own personal situations - let's face it, most of the traditional interpretations leave this background out, and instead just present phrases for the hexagrams and individual lines which can be extraordinarily puzzling and apparently unrelated to the question at hand. By relating each hexagram to the actual historical happening that inspired the traditional interpretations, the hexagrams are put into a much clearer (and more easily applicable) light.
Some of the versions of the I Ching I have which are written in "modern English" just give the authors own personal take on the hexagrams - while sometimes useful, these "translations" are usually somewhat suspect because they often leave the original texts of the hexagrams and lines out. But that is not the case here! The traditional texts are included, and then presented with additional explanatory text by the author. So, you get the best of both worlds. Sometimes the authors own interpretations aren't quite applicable to your question, but the traditional text is, and sometimes it's the other way around. This edition of the I Ching give you both!
I wholeheartedly recommend this book. If this is your first exposure to the I Ching, it will serve as an excellent introduction, and certainly one you will use for years to come (even if you purchase several other different translations, as I have). If you are like me, someone who has studied the I Ching for years, you will immediately appreciate the clarity and depth the author presents.
Don't be fooled by the title. You do not need to be a "complete idiot" to get great value from this book!

perfectly suited for its title

I ordered this book to work on a thesis I was doing for my Mass Comm. focus. I wanted to find a book that gave me some direction on what thinkers from past the present have had an impact on the media environment that we now find ourselves in today. This book was exactly what I was looking for. It gave a small chapter to each philosopher or person who played an important part in the history of journalism and media theory. Furthermore, Altshull writes in an extrememly lucid and simple way - making the book both engaging, easy, and enjoyable without losing any of the important content. His footnotes were very useful for find other sources as well. The organization, presentation, and content found with the pages of this book were perfectly suited for my needs and have helped me handle surbeying the main points I was looking for in each philosopher. I recommend this book to any and all people.

Really?

The story was fairly interesting but I didn't care to be left hanging. In my opinion a book is either free or I pay for it -- I don't appreciate a few chapters and then told I will have to pay for the rest.

If I misunderstood I apologize but I don't care for this sort of promotion.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me. I guess the shame is on me because when I got to the end of this book, it was only PART of the book. So I spent the money for the rest of the book on the sequel "Moonlight Falls on Seven Sisters" (book 2) but there was no end to the story in this book. We are not talking about just another book about the same people, we are talking about not finishing the story at all. Ok, so dumb of me not to check it out first, but the conclusion to the book is not available on the Kindle. So if and when I find the end of the book, I will have lost interest or forgotten what was going on with the plot, I will say that I enjoyed the writing and the plot is interesting, but I hate it when I get a "Book" and it is only some of the chapters of the real book.

False advertising

You think you are getting a full novel but it is not.

Just so everyone knows when getting this book, there isn't an ending. It is the start of the story. If you are into historical, paranormal novels you will pick up this book only to find you have been tricked into thinking you are getting a full novel with a beginning, a middle and an end. You get to the beginning of the middle and that's it.. I guess so you have to buy Book 2 and then I guess book 3 etc. No one should pay for this book. Only read if you are willing to buy the next book and who knows you may just find you will have to buy again and again. I don't mind being led into buying book 2 but I want to have some closure to book 1 not left just when the action starts. Other authors do it so such better without the reader left hanging with a bunch of nothing.

About the Author

Born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Erich Fromm (1900-1980) studied sociology and psychoanalysis. In 1933, he emigrated as a member of the Frankfurt School of social thinkers to the United States, moved to Mexico in 1950, and spent his twilight years between 1974 and 1980 in Switzerland. His books Fear of Freedom (1941) and The Art of Loving (1956) made him famous. Other well-known books are Marx's Concept of Man, Beyond the Chains of Illusion, and The Essential Fromm.

Process, not possession

To have or to be?

Well... to be, says Fromm.

In response to the materialism of our century and our propensity to reification, psychoanalyst Erich Fromm proposes a mode of living that he argues is the way out of our psychospiritual conundrum.

Within the pages of this book, one of the last before his demise, the author of the bestseller _ The Art of Loving_ describes the two modes possible--that of having and being. 20th century culture he says has developed into employing and relying on the having mode--of appropriating things and even humans for oneself. Even love has been turned into an object, when in fact no such thing exists. Only the act of loving is possible.

In contradistinction to having is being. It is a mode of active participation in life. While the misnomer 'falling in love' is touted by the world as the norm, Fromm argues that true loving is an effortful activity. While accumulating knowledge is the way of having, the being mode of knowing is a process of understanding.

Although written nearly three decades ago, Fromm's worldview continues to be the ideal. This work of his is a timeless caveat against the dehumanization of society.

Fromm is one of the classics - along with Freud, Jung, Adler. He studied psychology, philosophy and sociology, received his PhD at the age of 22, became interested in Zen Buddhism at the age of 26. One of the true geniuses.

This book was written in 1976. Fromm debates that there are two possible modes of living: one of having and of being. He points out the differences between the two and of a person living in the having mode to the one living in the being mode. He shows the differences in behavior and attitude between the two in many life's areas and experiences: studying, remembering, talking, reading, faith, love, handling authority. The less you are oriented on having, the more you are being.

A Powerful Spiritual Book

I have already read twice this book in the past three years and consider re-reading it again soon. It has become part of me; everyday I remember key sentences from the book which help me make sense of my own life, attitudes, and ideas. Two notions (a) the "being" way of life as opposed to "having", and (b) "matter is in constant flux" help me let go, relieving me of my attachment to things material. Paradoxically, they also give me the courage to experience life in a more proactive way, and to accept and appreciate life as it is without trying to force events. It's a truly spiritual and healing book.
