The Best Undergraduate Textbook I've Seen for Genetics

I've just completed my first semester teaching Genetics at a small liberal arts college in Indiana. Because I was jumping into the position I was stuck using the text previously designed for the class. Almost a third of the book was classical genetics, which I enjoy, but was certainly overplayed. Molecular Biology areas were a jumble of terms to learn and lists to inscribe into their brains. The problems in the book did not reflect the material in the text, leaving the class pretty much upset with the book. By midterm it was time to find another sources for the class.
I found myself reaching for other texts, and "Genetics, Analysis and Principles" turned out to be the jewel. It is well balanced, very clearly written, and does not spend its time making students read long memory lists of genes or proteins that the class is going to forget less than two weeks after the term. I think this is largely reflected by the way he wrote the book; with input from students.
Reading the intro I was afraid that this text was going to be way over into the experimental design/ data side which I've seen in other texts mean "no content". Not so this text; experimental design has been written into the book to describe genetics and content, not replace it. I think what is truely unique about this book is the use of scientific process as a way to teach concepts. I wish I had more books like this one for other courses. I hope Dr. Brooker's format for Biology (and yes other science courses) is adopted for other courses.
If you are considering a text for your Genetics classes, I think you will be very pleased with this book.

Excellent text for self-directed learning

I used this textbook in a distance learning course and have found it to be invaluable to my learnng experience.
For anyone who has taken Genetics, you'll account for the fact that it is not an easy course. Taking it without a professor present is even more challenging. Luckily this text is well written and easy to follow. The author uses a mix of theory and experiment examples to drive important concepts home. The language is not dry like in many Biology texts. Instead, it is easy to read, almost to the point of being enjoyable.
There are a few things I really liked:
1. The illustrations in this book are paramount to learning difficult concepts. When explaining experimental procedures, the text is accompanied by step-by-step instuctions and illustrations as to how the experiment was carried out. This proved helpful in visualizing the procedure.
2. Each chapter is well organized and easy to understand. The author speaks in easy to understand terms (that is if you have had previous Biology courses.) His writing style is dynamic and never boring.
3. Difficult concepts are often explained more than once. Sometimes the book gets a little ahead of itself, but page numbers and chapters are always given so you can read about things you don't understand.
4. The end of each chapter provides the reader with provocative critical thinking questions that solidify important points from the chapter. Best of all, even numbered answers are given in the back so you can check yourself without hunting through the book.
Overall I'd give this book an A and it will remain in my collection of Biology texts.

Sudent Friendly; Sometimes Wordy but Easy to Understand

This book explains genetics concepts in a clear manner. It is was described to me as both teacher friendly and student friendly. I can easily see how it could indeed be both, though I can only comment on it from a teacher p.o.v. It is the book I've chosen to prepare my class from, and I would highly recommend it for any Genetics class.

About the Author

Don Casey credits the around-the-world voyage of Robin Lee Graham, featured in National Geographic in the late 1960s, with opening his eyes to the world beyond the shoreline. After graduation from the University of Texas he moved to south Florida, where he began to spend virtually all his leisure time messing about in boats.

In 1983 he abandoned a career in banking to devote more time to cruising and writing. His work combining these two passions soon began to appear in many popular sailing and boating magazines. In 1986 he co-authored Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, an immediate best-seller and the book responsible for pushing many would-be cruisers over the horizon. He is also author of This Old Boat, a universally praised guide that has led thousands of boatowners through the process of turning a rundown production boat into a first-class yacht, and of Sailboat Refinishing, Sailboat Hull & Deck Repair, Canvaswork & Sail Repair, and Inspecting the Aging Sailboat, all part of the International Marine Sailboat Library. He continues to evaluate old and new products and methods, often trying them on his own 30-year-old, much-modified, Allied Seawind.

When not writing or off cruising, he can be found sailing on Florida's Biscayne Bay.

Don Casey does it again

I own all of the books in the series. The only thing that bothers me is how smart Don Casey is. If you own any of his books, this one is the same but with canvas. There are projects from easy to more difficult (I'm a beginner) and a surprising number of them will be useful to most boaters/sailors.

This is a really handy book that will save you a lot of money. The work isn't difficult, you just have to remember that your are dealing with large pieces of fabric and not just sewing on a button.

Learn canvaswork and sail repair through stepped projects

Let me try to be a bit more balanced than "Deke." What Deke leaves out is that, right at the outset of this well-written and well-illustrated book, Casey states that the book is laid out as a graduated set of projects...starting from easy, "broadsheet" projects, which includes a bimini, stepping through more and more detailed projects...a well thought-out presentation that will overcome a laymen's anxieties about learning these new skills, and overcoming our own "Nay-saying." I've talked to a number of sailors that do their own canvas work, and they all say the biggest hurdle is telling ourselves we dont know how and we can't do it. This book breaks that nay-sayer's ice...start small, get used to the machine by doing things like duffle bags and winch and bumper covers...and graduate to bigger and more involved projects. Any skill like this comes from hands-on DOING, so I really don't get what Deke's expecting out of a book...you're not going to end up a Journeyman canvas-worker from a book...just get a machine (FS-288Z...a clone of the LSZ-1!)...and dig in.

I would share this book!!!

Martha Doesn't Share! is a delightful book about an adorable otter named Martha who needs tweaking with her social skills. It seems her most favorite word is "Mine".

When baby brother Edwin asks to play with her toys, she quite emphatically tells him, they are hers and hers alone. Mom and Dad Otter urge Martha to take turns, but Martha stubbornly reminds everyone that the toys belong to her and she goes off to play by herself. While performing magic tricks is fun, it's not as enjoyable without an audience. She realizes the "it's hard to ping when you don't have someone to pong." Martha discovers that her toys by themselves cannot bring her the fun and enjoyment she expects. Martha learns that by sharing, she is guaranteed a playmate and finds an amusing solution to her problem. Loved the ending. It reminded me of a similar outcome when my own baby brother and I learned to share.

Cute illustrations, warm colors and an enjoyable read all the way around.

Great book that helps toddlers learn the importance of sharing

This book had many colorful illustrations and the story was simple to understand for both toddlers age children. My 2 year old found it entertaining; she would laugh when Martha said everything was "mine,mine, mine" because she recognized that behavior. The story shows that no one wants to play with Martha when she doesn't share and it can be boring and lonely. My daughter really understood after reading it that sharing wasn't just about being "nice" to others; she also learned sharing made play more fun and benefited her. We loved this book!

Another Amazing Martha Book...YAY!

I am so thrilled that there is a second Martha book to share with my son! Our first Martha book, Martha Doesn't Say Sorry really helped him to understand the importance of apologizing when we have hurt someone. And now a book on sharing--another HUGE topic in our house right now. I absolutely love the Martha books--they tackle important issues for little ones and help them learn life's lessons in a humorous and compassionate way. Keep 'em coming!!!

Amazingly Accurate

Whatever you might think of the author, this book nailed the results of WWII at a time when it looked bad for England in its struggle to resist the German war machine. Now it is 2013 and it appears that Mr. Rimmer may have used Bible prophecy in 1940 to correctly name the mayor Countries that will be involved in the next big war in the Middle East, as well as again predicting the results of that war according to the Bible. Although I did not agree with him on every point in the book, there were certainly some eye opening surprises brought out about prophecy in chapters 9-11 that I had not previously noticed. There are not a lot of words in this 11 chapter book, but if the author is correct again, then it is well worth reading for those interested in prophetic events.
