A fun book

I bought Gradshteyn & Ryzhik because I had to write an answer to some homework problem in some physics class that I took. The problem had contorted itself into a perverse elliptic integral and its recovery was beyond my means, so I went to the bookstore, looked for something fat and Soviet, and found this gem. I forked over the cash for it, figuring that it was a long-term investment.
I took it home and dutifully plagiarized some of its lines to satisfy my physics professor. For the next few months, that was the mode in which I used this book: read physics problem, translate into elliptic or hypergeometric beast, look up answer in G&R, cover up my tracks, get 9 or 10 points on the problem. Occasionally, I would own up to having looked something up.
The book served its purpose well. Subsequently, I studied some integrals of the spinning top that were more or less right out of Nikiforov's book on special functions (another excellent source for those of you that would like to "earn" a PhD), and G&R stood well by its side. Indeed, I discovered how much fun it was to look up an integral whose complicated solution had been derived elsewhere, and then to look for patterns by analyzing the immediate neighbors of the given integral on the preceding and subsequent lines in G&R.
After I was done with answering questions from physics professors, the book sat on the shelf taking up more room than several of its neighbors put together. Nonetheless, its binding was good, its typesetting clear, and its terse and copious stream of forbidding integral forms was pleasing to the eye.
Some time passed, and one day I asked myself just what would motivate anybody to write such a large collection, so I started rummaging through its pages looking for a pattern. I realized that its organization was excellent (which would explain why I was able to find the answers for my homework), and I also found some sections that were just plain fun. The very beginning lists some sums of infinite series that can be derived during lunch or while waiting for a friend at a cafe (e.g. sum of k^3 = [1/2(n)(n+1)]^2 ). Then one can read about numbers and functions named after Euler, Jacobi, Bernoulli, Catalan... each line, more or less, is cross-referenced, so after you have given up trying to derive that darned product representation of the gamma function, you can go to the book in the library and see how Whittaker did it.
After about 15 years of owning this book, I am nowhere near done with it. If you like math, and you want insurance against being bored, this book just might do the trick. As a bonus, it puts cute matrix stuff in the back (e.g. the "circulant") which one can read when desiring a break from the integrals. I know the book seems expensive, but think of if as spending about two bucks a year on it.
I see that one can now obtain a CDRom version of G&R. An intriguing option, specially because it outputs in TeX; but really, how can anyone resist the large, stubby charm of its paper version?
G&R can help you to deal with members of the opposite sex. I once used it to scare away a girlfriend that was becoming much too annoying, by pretending to be thickly engrossed in the process of memorizing every single integral in the "special functions" chapters. As for my mother, she was particularly proud of me when I showed her that I could actually understand "randomly selected" pages from this book (I don't suppose that I am giving anything away by remarking that books open naturally on sections that have been previously examined).
For those of you that are concerned about home security, G&R is also a weapon. Some people surround themselves with baseball bats or, if they are particularly reckless, a handgun or two... I prefer to keep a fully-loaded G&R by my pillow, which I can hurl at any prowler at a moment's notice. Its shape is surprisingly well adjusted to the hand for the purposes of hurling, and if the covers are bound by a rubber band, the book maintains its shape quite stably as it sails across the room. Sell your Smith & Wesson and buy yourself a Gradshteyn & Ryzhik. You won't regret it.

Daunting at first but worth it.

Before it was much use, I had to read the section as to how the book is organized. As the other reviewers state the integrals are comprehensive and as far as I have used correct. The integrals are very useful, but this book includes many other features that I have found helpful as a graduate student. The sections on Hermite and Legendre polynomials are especially helpful for students of Electricity and Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, and Mathematical physics (you won't have to hunt in several books to find what you need). The included identities for hyperbolic and trig functions are very helpful simplifying homework answers, mostly because of their comprehensive nature. This book is great because it seems to have everything and most people will not need to buy another table. The binding is good also, so it should last many years with normal care. This is a very good investment.

Let's keep this short and sweet. The book is probably THE best in what it claims to be, i.e. a compendium of mainly integrals, but all sorts of interesting stuff also manages to find its way in. Why some former reviewers exhaust their artillery in complaining about the CD is beyond me. This is a reference BOOK an as such unsurpassed. Buy it for sheer pleasure if for nothing else. While you're at it, you might want to take a look at Handbook of Mathematics by I. N. Bronshtein et al. which I ordered from Amazon in Germany a moment ago. That one also comes with a CD and I'm getting curious about how it will turn out to be. But Gradshteyn and Ryzhik - the BOOK - are a must.

The best of its kind

This route guide is one of the best I've seen out in the market place. It has all the details that a long distance biker on a budget would need including: road map, elevation map, descriptions of interesting sites, road conditions, traffic conditions, mileage, camping sites with levels of amenities (esp important shower), and where to get food and other supplies/services. I also liked the fact that it wasn't trying to be everything to everyone by not including detailed information on hotels, motels, restaurants, etc except for the fact that they exist or don't exist in a particular town or area.

So why did I not give them 5 stars?

1) Internal inconsistancy - there are a significant amount of these. Mostly it is where the mileage of the description doesn't match with the mileage of the elevation map. Here's an example. In the Oregon Border to Elk Prairie Campground the written route description indicates that the first summit of the Crescent City hills is at mile 34.6 but the elevation map shows that summit at 28 miles. Am I cutting hairs? You decide. But depending on your ride pace a 6-7 mile difference can be 1/2 hour, not so much of an issue in the middle of the day but it might be at the end of the day.

2) Updated content - I have a suspicion that the guide hasn't been updated even though the 4th edition came out just recently. For the most part, the guide was written in a timeless manner that prevents it from showing much age. For example, it doesn't recommend particular restaurants. But things do change. For example on the Elk Prarie Campground to Eureka KOA day the recommended route is on Hwy 101. It's very busy and a couple of nice smaller roads are recommended (Patrick's Point and Little River St Beach). But the Hammond Trail, that takes you from Clam Beach County Park, just north of McKinleyville, South for 13 miles mostly on car free paved path, isn't mentioned. 3) Out of scale road maps with little detail - It would have been nice if they sprang for some real maps. For example in the Nehalem Bay State Park to Cape Lookout day, the written mileage shows that Cape Meares State Park to Netarts is 4.5 miles and that Netars to Cape Lookout is 6 miles. Which seems about right after biking this portion. But on the road map the distance from Netarts to Cape Lookout appears to be 5 to 6 times further.

Overall, if you are biking down the coast, absolutely get this book but suppliment it with other resources such as AAA roadmaps, Adventure Cycling's bike maps, or the Oregon Dept of Transportation "Oregon Coast Bike Route" (found at the Oregon Tourist offices).

I've ridden parts of the coast, Santa Cruz to the border and Aberdeen to Eureka and look forward to filling in the gaps. Some advice: 1) Go "off season", much of the ride is basically on heavily traveled highways. I didn't know so many RVs existed. 2) Go out of your way to meet your fellow bike tourists. I met people from all over Europe, Asia and even Americans. All with cool stories. 3) Get your bike in top notch shape, before your ride. Let's just say I toured most of the bike shops in Oregon over a four day period. Not fun. 4) Don't ride everyday and don't forget to relax.

Good book, but I mailed it home in favor of maps

I biked the entire Pacific coast in September 2005, and used this book to help plan my trip. Were I to do it again knowing what I know now, I wouldn't buy the book.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good book - I read it ahead of time and it helped me figure out relative distances and times, which helped in planning. In general it seemed very thorough and well put-together, and I met people on my trip that used it.

It's main drawback is that it's a BOOK. It's not convenient to refer to on the road, and the directions, while nicely detailed, are too verbose for real reference. In addition, because it's fundamentally a linear narrative of how to get from here to there, it's not very convenient if you need or want to get off of their path for any reason.

I mailed this book home after I discovered that my Adventure Cycling maps (adv-cycling dot org) fulfilled all of my needs - directions, detail in cities, where to shower, sleep & eat (including phone #s), elevation, and distances. Besides that, they are small, waterproof, and easy to refer to while riding or pull out at a stop-sign.

In general I'm a more visual/map guy than a directions/narative guy, so your mileage may vary. If you want a book to tell you how to bike the Pacific coast, this is the one. If any of what I said sounds like you it applies to you, feel free to skip the book.

It's more of tradition to read this now. I did use it but I had other maps and lots of internet research. I met people along the coast with other guides. I don't recommend only using this book to bike the coast. Bring we extra maps as cell service can be spotty.

ACLS was a success

I PASSED. Let's just say I was super nervous. This booked helped me along with algorithms and medications. I bought a separate thing online (not affiliated with the AHA to help me with rhythms), this book has very little on heart rhythms but identification of them is important for knowing what to do in a code. Overall having the book was a big help.

Great book by The American Heart Association. Everything very well explained and very clearly. It does take sometime to go through the contents and organize the info. It brings labels that you place in every session for easy finding as you review the materials.

Very weak - silly plot, paper characters, missed opportunity

I found this book very disappointing on many levels. Mr. Jeter's writing at times is very good, addictive and energetic, but at other times it seems like he's just going through the motions. This uneven writing makes this book seem like he was given a loose outline of what is supposed to happen with a checklist of character to include and that he is going through line by line stitching it together. Some of it is good, but in general, it just doesn't work.

I went into this expecting to see a continuation of the thought process Deckard was going through in DADES, this blurring of the human and replicant/android and how this reflects to the gift and beauty of life. I wanted to see what it was that made Deckard give it up and go with Rachel... and if it was worth it. I wanted to know it there was a chance Deckard was a replicant and how he would have worked through that. Was there a way to escape the 4 year life or could life be just as good within it?

Instead, we get a rambling story about convincing Deckard to hunt a "6th replicant" and go back through everything he already has, including the return of Holden and Bryant, Batty and Pris, Sebastion and his toys and that old 'chickenhead' Isidore (who has become very smart). There's a bunch of action stuck in there, much of it gratuitous and a lot of out of character with Deckard. By the end, nothing has really progressed and nothing much really changed.

Overall, this book isn't very good. The writing is uneven and the plot is silly. It just doesn't feel like the same characters or ideas that the book (DADES) and movie set up. That's a shame because there was some really good ground this could have covered - instead we get the equivalent of a straight to DVD sequel with different actors, different director, and no money for a writer. Stay away from this one.

Blade Runner 2: Outshined by the original

Being a huge fan of the movie (director's cut version) I was extremely eager to see what Jeter had done with it. Jeter's style is complicated and depressing; which is probably what he intended. The story line swerves all over the place like a snake being held by the neck and Jeter does an above average job for a sequel. Some cronic fans of the movie will be let down, however, since the original is much better due to a less complicated but deeper storyline. Blade runner is a ten out of ten classic, but Blade Runner 2 is only above average. It was a bit of a dissapointment for me. It amuses me that the sixth replicant was actually just a mixup during the making of the movie and if they had done it correctly then this book would have been a completely different story. One thing that bugged me was some of the climaxes. Most of them were over the top; for instance when Deckard escapes from the police station and the very last climax. But generally speaking, it was still a good book that was intruiging reading. I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone and definetely not to people who havent seen the movie or read the book 'Do androids dream of electric sheep?'

Sadly this is a book I abandoned reading. A sequel to Blade Runner that didn't need to happen, and not very fun to read.
