perfectly suited for its title

I ordered this book to work on a thesis I was doing for my Mass Comm. focus. I wanted to find a book that gave me some direction on what thinkers from past the present have had an impact on the media environment that we now find ourselves in today. This book was exactly what I was looking for. It gave a small chapter to each philosopher or person who played an important part in the history of journalism and media theory. Furthermore, Altshull writes in an extrememly lucid and simple way - making the book both engaging, easy, and enjoyable without losing any of the important content. His footnotes were very useful for find other sources as well. The organization, presentation, and content found with the pages of this book were perfectly suited for my needs and have helped me handle surbeying the main points I was looking for in each philosopher. I recommend this book to any and all people.

The story was fairly interesting but I didn't care to be left hanging. In my opinion a book is either free or I pay for it -- I don't appreciate a few chapters and then told I will have to pay for the rest.

If I misunderstood I apologize but I don't care for this sort of promotion.

Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me. I guess the shame is on me because when I got to the end of this book, it was only PART of the book. So I spent the money for the rest of the book on the sequel "Moonlight Falls on Seven Sisters" (book 2) but there was no end to the story in this book. We are not talking about just another book about the same people, we are talking about not finishing the story at all. Ok, so dumb of me not to check it out first, but the conclusion to the book is not available on the Kindle. So if and when I find the end of the book, I will have lost interest or forgotten what was going on with the plot, I will say that I enjoyed the writing and the plot is interesting, but I hate it when I get a "Book" and it is only some of the chapters of the real book.

False advertising

You think you are getting a full novel but it is not.

Just so everyone knows when getting this book, there isn't an ending. It is the start of the story. If you are into historical, paranormal novels you will pick up this book only to find you have been tricked into thinking you are getting a full novel with a beginning, a middle and an end. You get to the beginning of the middle and that's it.. I guess so you have to buy Book 2 and then I guess book 3 etc. No one should pay for this book. Only read if you are willing to buy the next book and who knows you may just find you will have to buy again and again. I don't mind being led into buying book 2 but I want to have some closure to book 1 not left just when the action starts. Other authors do it so such better without the reader left hanging with a bunch of nothing.

About the Author

Born in Frankfurt-am-Main, Erich Fromm (1900-1980) studied sociology and psychoanalysis. In 1933, he emigrated as a member of the Frankfurt School of social thinkers to the United States, moved to Mexico in 1950, and spent his twilight years between 1974 and 1980 in Switzerland. His books Fear of Freedom (1941) and The Art of Loving (1956) made him famous. Other well-known books are Marx's Concept of Man, Beyond the Chains of Illusion, and The Essential Fromm.

Well... to be, says Fromm.

In response to the materialism of our century and our propensity to reification, psychoanalyst Erich Fromm proposes a mode of living that he argues is the way out of our psychospiritual conundrum.

Within the pages of this book, one of the last before his demise, the author of the bestseller _ The Art of Loving_ describes the two modes possible--that of having and being. 20th century culture he says has developed into employing and relying on the having mode--of appropriating things and even humans for oneself. Even love has been turned into an object, when in fact no such thing exists. Only the act of loving is possible.

In contradistinction to having is being. It is a mode of active participation in life. While the misnomer 'falling in love' is touted by the world as the norm, Fromm argues that true loving is an effortful activity. While accumulating knowledge is the way of having, the being mode of knowing is a process of understanding.

Although written nearly three decades ago, Fromm's worldview continues to be the ideal. This work of his is a timeless caveat against the dehumanization of society.

Fromm is one of the classics - along with Freud, Jung, Adler. He studied psychology, philosophy and sociology, received his PhD at the age of 22, became interested in Zen Buddhism at the age of 26. One of the true geniuses.

This book was written in 1976. Fromm debates that there are two possible modes of living: one of having and of being. He points out the differences between the two and of a person living in the having mode to the one living in the being mode. He shows the differences in behavior and attitude between the two in many life's areas and experiences: studying, remembering, talking, reading, faith, love, handling authority. The less you are oriented on having, the more you are being.

A Powerful Spiritual Book

I have already read twice this book in the past three years and consider re-reading it again soon. It has become part of me; everyday I remember key sentences from the book which help me make sense of my own life, attitudes, and ideas. Two notions (a) the "being" way of life as opposed to "having", and (b) "matter is in constant flux" help me let go, relieving me of my attachment to things material. Paradoxically, they also give me the courage to experience life in a more proactive way, and to accept and appreciate life as it is without trying to force events. It's a truly spiritual and healing book.

About the Author
Michael D. Ward is Professor of Political Science at Duke University. He is an affiliate of the Duke Network Analysis Center. His primary interests are in international relations (spanning democratization, globalization, international commerce, military spending, as well as international conflict and cooperation), political geography, as well as mathematical and statistical methods.

Kristian Skrede Gleditsch is Professor in the Department of Government, University of Essex and a Research Associate at the Centre for the Study of Civil War, PRIO. His research interests include conflict and cooperation, democratization, and spatial dimensions of social and political processes. He is the author of All International Politics is Local: The Diffusion of Conflict, Integration, and Democratization (University of Michigan Press, 2002) and Spatial Regression Models (Sage, 2008, with Michael D. Ward) as well as articles in journals including American Journal of Political Science, American Political Science Review, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Biological Reviews, International Interactions, International Organization, International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research, Political Analysis, Political Psychology, and World Politics.

About the Author

Scott Meyer grew up in the small town of Sunnyside, Washington. He began his career in humor by working as a standup comedian and radio personality, a highlight of which was participating as the opening act in Weird Al Yankovic’s “Running with Scissors” tour. Following a long stint touring the United States and Canada, Scott settled down in Orlando, Florida, where he works on his ongoing comic strip, Basic Instructions. Spell or High Water is his second novel.

Good Follow-On to Off To Be The Wizard

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a nice diversion, although I didn't love it quite as much as the first. To be fair, the first book introduced us to an all-new universe, and the second one had to do a lot to avoid just being a follow-on. Scott Meyer came up with some interesting plot twists to throw into this one (Atlantis, the Brits), but at the end of the day, it didn't feel all-new so much as a slight rehash of Book 1. It almost felt like Meyer didn't have enough material for another book.

With that said, I enjoyed reading about the continued adventures of Martin, Phillip, and Gwen. I just hoped that there would be slightly more meat to them than the relatively straightforward assassin plot. I mean, what's the point in repeatedly trying to kill people who can't be killed?

The one thing that didn't really make sense to me was the side plot woven in through the whole story. I assumed that either it would integrate into the main plot or else the book would end on a cliffhanger, making way for a sequel, but instead the author wrapped up that plot quite neatly in just a few pages.

Overall, fans of the first book will probably enjoy this one, but I've definitely read better.

A solid follow up to Off to be the Wizard. Very comfortable and quite amusing, some of the gags / punch lines are telegraphed but (IMO) that goes with having your characters somewhat frozen in their maturity levels (geek mode). It should be noted that both the romantic situations and violence are softened and indirect (a PG-13 feel throughout) which I found "charming". While there are some humorously presented deep thought issues (Free will, the nature of knowledge etc.) they do not become a distraction. The two major plotlines are presented much more intelligently than (IMO) book one.

I really feel like this was a massive step back from the last book. Large portions of the book dragged on, and a lot of it was extremely repetitive. Unlike some other reviewers, I found the Jimmy side story to be the best part of the book. I don't want to get full detailed with this review so I won't go into a spoiler alert breaking down what parts I did and didn't like, but I really felt the ending of the Atlantis dilemma was pretty weak and predictable. The Jimmy portion was actually fascinating. I'd like to read more about his cross continental situation.

I will buy the next book in the series, though. The storyline is very original.
