Judy Moody Gets Famous

I recently bought the Judy Moody books for my 8 year old son. I read them too and found them to be enjoyable.
In this one Judy just wants to be famous SO bad especially after her younger brother Stink, gets to go to the White House and one of her classroom rivals wins a spelling bee. She, along with her closest friends, try hard to become "famous". Her first attempt of trying to make people believe that she actually has a cherry pit that belonged to George Washington end hilariously. Later she sees a chance to win a contest at the local pet store but at the last minute that one goes awry.
Judy does finally achieve "stardom" and it is very heartwarming.
You will enjoy these books as well as your children. My 8 year old son just loves them and can't wait for the next one. If your child enjoys the Junie B books, they will probably like these as well.

An Educator's View

This series is a good reading level for third or fourth graders to take on independently. Younger children will enjoy having these stories read to them.
I like many things about this book. The story line is funny and engaging. There are many examples of onomatopoeia. Additionally, the book introduces interesting and educational facts. Judy is a character that many young girls will be able to relate to. Children with younger siblings will easily relate to and enjoy the interactions between Judy and her little brother, Stink.

Here is what I do not like: Judy does an awful lot of lying in this book and never faces any consequences. I believe this sends a terrible message to our children.

No other word but funny...

The sequel to Judy Moody can get no other word than being funny! After she fails to win the spelling bee contest and sees her arch rival Jessica win and get that beautiful tiara Judy Moody made it her job to become famous!! However like all other Judy Moody books things get out of hand and the book turns outragously funny. Judy's cat named "Mouse" helps achieve some fame but that isn't lasting. A hilirious book for all ages to enjoy and laugh about!!

I have been reading this book for a graduate level ...

I have been reading this book for a graduate level course. I would say Brown and Lee do not provide enough examples of concepts they are talking about, specifically in the Speaking, Reading, Listening portions of their book. They are also oddly non-specific in the boxes meant to expound more on a concept mentioned in the paragraph above it. This book leaves something to be desired but is an interesting read regarding pedagogy and why we should or shouldn't teach a certain way.

A good resource for new ESL teachers

A good resource for new ESL teachers. I'm not new and so I used this recent edition to compare to an earlier one; there wasn't much difference when I compared the two sections I was interested in, but it's a good idea to purchase the most recent edition of an ESL textbook if it's available for just a few dollars more.

This book is full of a lot of 'obvious' information about ESL teaching 'theory'.
It is dry, boring, and hard to read through.

The only reason I'm using it is because the professor requires it for class.

I'm glad I rented this book rather than buying it because I would never keep
this book once I've finished the class.

Poland's example has had a powerful impact on reforms throughout the region, including the former Soviet Union, and has done much to dispel the fear that the citizens themselves, allegedly made lazy by decades of socialism, would reject the competitive rigors of a market economy. Harvard professor Sachs, the noted author of several books on international trade and an economic adviser to over a dozen countries, including Poland, is a major commentator on the awesome task of economic reform in Eastern Europe. In this latest work, he advocates a "big bang" approach to economic reform in Poland and other Eastern European countries. This type of reform (also called "shock therapy") favors the quick conversion of socialist economies to capitalism (featuring the elimination of price controls and the overhaul of monetary policy, among other things), rather than the slow, methodical approach championed by some other economists. Sachs's work is well researched, convincing, and quite fascinating; the method he advocates is already proving effective in Poland. Highly recommended.

Good overview

Filled with simple tables of statistics from before and after transition policies, this book is straightforward, very readable, very enjoyable and useful. Its is pretty short, but covers all the basics for an overview of the process and transformation during what what a very successful and very fast transition. Sachs is modest and cautious in his evaluation of progress-- and yet he had reason to be proud.

Contrast this with "Privatizing Russia" wherein the authors boast about the obvious success of their theories and policy proposals and yet leave the country rife with corruption. This book also covers the theories of privatization and transition a lot less, but instead presents the case of Poland, which can be used as an example. Sometimes one real successful case study is more useful than a lot of high sounding theory.

One important takeaway though, is that Poland had it easy in that it was a small socialized country in the midst of a pretty well functioning European marketplace. As soon as it opened its economy to international trade and foreign investment, competition was introduced to all the firms-- even as they were still nationalized. The benefits of the market were immediate in competition, inputs, prices, etc. Russia had to do without this immense benefit.

Great Narrative

This is one of the best economic books I have ever read. Filled with concise arguments and figures, Sachs makes his case for the liberalization of the Polish economy. Never boring and a very good read, this book is an inside depth into Poland's free market reforms.

Satisfying and Note-Worthy

A novel about friendship and falling in love, White is for Virgins is a definite must read. Emily, the shy and socially awkward new student, and Fox, the all popular ladies' man of Hartford High, forms an unexpected relationship full of sweet chemistry.
Readers would expect a blend of wit and realism that perfectly complements the young love between the two. Characters are alive and natural, evoking what a typical high school student would be, and how they would react and feel about the situations they were put into. Each chapter is meaningful but not heavily burdened, the novel flowing fluidly for each climax.
All in all, readers would enjoy reading the witty and romantic encounters of Emily and Fox.

Is it really this late??!

I don't often write reviews, must less at 3:30 in the morning, but this book deserved it. I felt so... Inthralled and connected with and to these characters that it kept me going... On... And on... And on. White is for Virgins is a little over 700 pages, but with the fluid writing, relatable characters, and the ability that this book had to make me smile, it felt like 50.

Sometimes while reading books, I don't see why the characters fell in love or how. It seems like one day they just woke up and bam! It was love. While, in this novel I understood. I understood Emery's draw to Fox and why Fox would lay down his bad boy ways for Em.

This book really and truly is amazing and an awesome example of why I really love to read Indie novels. All in all, this is an perfect and moving book that will leave you ready to read it all over again.

I'm not sure if its the fact that I could relate identically to Emery or that I'm a sucker for these types of stories, but either way, I really enjoyed this book! If you are looking for a short and 100% grammatically correct story, then you have come to the wrong place. But what you will get is a heart felt, realistic story that will make you say "awwwwwww!" When you finish! In most instances. With spelling and grammar mistakes, it kind of gets on my nerves, but I was so engulfed in the story, that I started to overlook them. So yes, there are mistakes present, but I don't think it takes away from the story whatsoever.
Em and Fox are highly unlikely for each other, but represent a real and strong foundationed relationship that all romantics dream of. They have problems, and they are not perfect. It gives everyone hope that maybe happily ever aftershocks can exist!
So. If you don't mind the length (which flys by btw) then I highly reccomend reading!!
