Dr. Allen Taflove has pioneered the finite-difference time-domain method since 1972, and is a leading authority in the field of computational electrodynamics. He is a professor at Northwestern University, where he also received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. A Fellow of IEEE, Dr. Taflove is listed on ISIHighlyCited.comSM as one of the most-cited researchers in the world.

Steven G. Johnson is an associate professor of applied Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds a B.S. degrees in physics, mathematics, and computer science and a Ph.D. in physics, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ardavan Oskooi is a postdoctoral associate at Kyoto University. He holds a B.S. in engineering science from the University of Toronto, and an M.S. in computation and engineering and Sc.D. in materials science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

About the Author
BARRY NALEBUFF is the Milton Steinbach Professor at Yale School of Management, where he teaches negotiation, innovation, and strategy. He is the coauthor of Thinking Strategically, Co-opetition, Why Not?, and The Art of Strategy. A graduate of MIT, and a Rhodes Scholar, he earned his doctorate at Oxford University. He has been a columnist for Forbes, and a regular commentator on Marketplace.

From a consumer standpoint, it's fascinating to see how this product got on the shelf and became a sensation. From an ENTREPRENEURIAL standpoint, it is even more intriguing and inspiring.

It walks you through with beautiful illustrations of all the conversations, creative brainstorming, essential events and meetings, and even a near death experience that leads to the eventual success of Honest Tea. Truly inspiring and also gives a person insight into starting a business, and bringing a product to market. Definitely a quick read and very unique in its approach to telling a great story.

Best business book I've found for one big reason...

As a serial entrepreneur, I've been trying to encourage my son to learn a little more about business and what we do - to little avail. Within minutes of opening my package, my 15 year old son (who I admit does not like to read, much prefers his Xbox) asked if he could see the book when he saw the format over my shoulder. A few minutes later he was curled up reading it. A business book that could actually be interesting to a teenager? On his own initiative? Congrats, Seth and Barry, for writing a great story!

Great Business Read (If Your Kids Don't Steal It)

One of my favorite topics is how business can be a force for good in our world. This is an amazing story of a startup business in what some would have called an over-saturated market ... bottled ice tea. Honest Tea took on Snapple and other big players because they had a vision that would make a difference in people's lives. Fast forward 10 years later, they were bought by Coke but kept pursuing that mission, and now 3 years later they are still living out their original mission despite being owned by a mega-corporation. This is the story of how Barry Nalebuff, Seth Goldman, and the team at Honest Tea have succeeded in leading a for-profit business as a vehicle for change ... and the many lessons they learned along the way.

Barry and Seth wanted to make a difference in the world. Barry was in the education sector; his partner Seth started out in the nonprofit and government sectors. They discovered that business can be an even more powerful tool for change. Of course, if the business doesn't thrive, you won't have any impact.

I was skeptical of the comic-style format ... would this be a serious business book that I could learn from? From the first few pages, I knew the answer was YES. The comic format made the book a fast, engaging read, but I still got a ton of practical, inspiring information from the book.

I should say it WOULD have been a fast read if my kids hadn't kept "borrowing" it from me before I had a chance to finish it. The comic format appealed to them and has been a great way to introduce key business and economic principles. I later asked my 13-year-old son to explain "marginal utility" (a concept I didn't learn until microeconomics class in college), and he still remembered it!

This is a book entrepreneurs should read before launching their business. This is a book current business leaders should read to take their business to the next level. And it's a book that parents should buy for their kids to help them learn life-long principles about business, economics, and living a purpose. Most of all, it's a book everyone should read to be reminded about the opportunity of for-profit businesses to change lives and communities for the better.

Comprehensive look at technical rescue and prevention

I chose this book out of professional interest ( I work in risk management and catastrophic injury management as an RN) and to get the input of my husband, a professional wilderness first responder and 30 year technical climber. With a house full of rope, ascenders, carabiners and chalk, I figured we could do a decent review.

Information flow is logical and thorough. Chapters are solid in the best practices of safety. Theory is in depth and the instruction information shows the author has advanced expertise. Rest assured that everything here is of the highest caliber in terms of climbing and equipment knowledge.

The equipment lists are completely current with the publication date. You are getting today's most accurate safety recommendations. Rigging instructions are very safe for the practitioner. The author progresses to advanced information that earned the respect of my expert husband.

The section on paperwork is extraordinarily useful to anyone and everyone who works with heights. As a nurse who deals with preventable trauma, I'd recommend this book to all of my employers who have any risk or heights in their work flow.

Conclusion? Useful book for experts and those learning "the ropes" of worker safety. I have presented on this to our loss control unit. I can say that every single head injury I am currently consulting on could have been prevented with the content of this book. Highly recommended to anyone in worker safety.

Very clear and comprehensive

This book is clear and comprehensive enough that it can be used, 'off the shelf', as a standard operating procedure for your company or organization. It is written and illustrated in a way that it can be provided to supervisors and managers for whom rescue planning is only a small part of their job, to ensure they are ready when an emergency occurs in their area. It would also work very well as a reference text for annual refresher training for your managers, supervisors, and line personnel.

Loui McCurley makes this book a 'one stop shop' for rescue planning. It covers top level strategic planning for rescues, equipment and resources needed, a whole section on actual rescue methods, techniques, and procedures, and a section on how to implement this form of risk management across different types of organizations.

No matter what your organization or business, if you have people working at height you should consider this book. After you do, you'll probably want to use it to increase your planning, training, and resourcing in this area.

Developed for workplace responders, Falls from Height has the genuine ability to save lives. If you are deciding on whether to assign this for a class, lecture, or seminar, here are some quick thoughts:

Pros:
-Post-chapter quizzes.
-End of chapter summaries.
-Writing is clear, jargon-free, and well-edited.
-Clearly labelled sequence of pictures demonstrate techniques like creating a double sheet bend, fisherman's bend, or even a barrel knot (154, 153, 149).
-Clearly set goals are listed at the beginning of each chapter.
-In-text boxes are used to emphasize key-points. (For instance, one box breaks-down essential elements of a helmet (96)).

Cons:
-A few of the black and white photos are a bit muddy.

Bottom-line: this text is specific to workplace responders, so it's really only a niche group of folks who can use it to its fullest extent. Nonetheless, if you (you students, or your employees) fall under this heading, this text is truly invaluable. This could be a life-saving purchase.

Sobering but helpful marriage advice

No marriage is easy, but some marriages build each partner up, while others tear each partner down; every marriage takes time and effort, but some marriages sap the spouses' strength, while others generate joy and enthusiasm and intimacy, according to Gary Thomas in this book. You are more likely to make a wise marriage choice if you settle the "why" question before considering the "who".

The author's advice includes:

* No matter who you marry, the feelings of romantic attraction are likely to wear off within 12 to 18 months
* If you seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness, you will set yourself up for a more fulfilling, spiritually enriching and more satisfying marriage
* Infatuation leads far more people astray than into satisfying marriages
* While it can seem like a tremendous ego boost to have someone seem like they are desperate for you, ask yourself if you're willing to play the role of God in their life
* The Bible encourages us to use wisdom, not destiny, as our guide when choosing a marital partner
* Important factors to consider include scriptural mandates, wisdom, parental and pastoral advice, and prayer
* If you marry for money, health or looks, keep in mind that none of these are certain to remain
* You're not just choosing a life partner; you're choosing your kids' future parent
* The man or woman you're thinking of marrying should be someone whose character can survive major life challenges
* A relationship requires two people getting to know each other, and then every day they have to choose to keep relating to each other or risk drifting apart
* It takes from 9 to 14 years for two individuals to stop thinking of themselves as individuals and to start thinking of themselves as a couple
* It's hard to accept that we are going to hurt someone we love so much, but if we marry them, we will

The book certainly provides plenty to think about for anyone contemplating marriage. When the requirements of a suitable marriage partner are all added together, the field of potential candidates is seriously narrowed. Most people experience severe struggles in their marriages, and most people are far from being perfect marriage partners, for many of the reasons the author has outlined. It is an eye-opening and sobering, but very helpful, book.

Great Tool for Premarital Counseling

If you don't recall I reviewed Gary Thomas's Every Body Matters and really enjoyed it so I jumped at the opportunity to read The Sacred Search. It also happens that as many of you know I'm writing a book about family discipleship and so I'm trying to read as many books about relationships from a Christian perspective as possible. All that aside: I enjoyed The Sacred Search.

Thomas argues that most people when searching for a spouse are doing it all wrong. They are placing the search above all else. Thomas uses Matthew 6:33 "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (see pp. 17-18). Says Thomas,
I want to make a promise to you: if you will see first God's kingdom and His righteousness and let that agenda drive your decision regarding whom you choose to marry and refuse to compromise on that, you will set yourself up for a much more fulfilling , spiritually enriching, and overall more satisfying marriage. The degree to which you compromise on this verse is the degree to which you put your future satisfaction in jeopardy and open wide the door to great frustration and even regret. (p. 22)
and later he points out,
You know why so many relationships slowly wither into nothingness? They stop seeking first the kingdom of God. There's no overarching mission in the couple's lives beyond self-enjoyment. This entraps them in a life of petty battles and superficial cares. . . . Living by the gospel provides the security so necessary to build a foundation of mutual fellowship (pp. 173, 175)
That foundation provides a spring board for expansive conversations surrounding searching for a marriage partner, pre-marital counseling, healthy relationships, and other related topics. I especially found his discussion on infatuation helpful. He brings in some science and also explains how the body works during this time. It helps to demystify those strong feelings (see chapter 3).

In the spectrum from Biblical counseling (only using the Bible) and modern psychology, Thomas seems somewhere slightly towards the psychology side. What I mean: he grounds his principles in Scripture but he's also strongly affirmative towards the impact of psychology. I'm somewhere slightly towards the Biblical counseling (CCEF) side of the spectrum, although I'm not suspicious of psychology and believe in using truth where ever it can be found. I say all that to say: my one concern with the book was Thomas's chapter on sexual sin and its consequences (chapter 15 "A Neurochemical War Against Your Reasoning"). For all the talk of the kingdom of God and gospel prior I found very little gospel for those who have sinned sexually in this chapter. Instead he points primarily towards "a tremendous amount of spiritual and psychological clinical work" to find healing (p. 198). It's not even that he didn't say overcoming the issue was possible but the language used seemed flippant (like "if you're really messed up" or "if either of you has a past that would make . . . Oprah blush" p. 198) and the emphasis seemed to shift more towards the psychology side. Some who are more affirming in psychology might not find a problem with the emphasis. I would recommend any one who has a history of sexual sin to first lay a good strong foundation of the gospel of Jesus Christ in your life.

Because of the breadth of the topics it would be a good resources for pastors and counselors. He covers almost every important topic to cover before getting married. The book could be used as a guide for pre-marital counseling with some fleshing out by the counselor. Because of the level of practicality I would recommend using this book in conjunction with Tim & Kathy Keller's The Meaning of Marriage. Good book with some concerns

This is a good book with excellent advice in terns of choosing Godly character above all else in whom your going to marry. But I felt like it was a bit unforgiving for those looking for a spouse that came from frayed past. The book seem to caution even entertaining possibly marrying individuals like that. There are many quality people that have fractured past and have worked hard to develop themselves as quality people and the books doesn't seem to recognize this. I fear that it may present as being hopeless unless you have a had a perfect upbringing and a general past free of problems if you are that type of reader reading this book.
