Elegant, poetic, and visionary as well as excellent science.

If I believed in reincarnation, I would think that Elisabet Sahtouris was Homer in a previous life. She writes with the grand sweep and musical throb of an epic poet and, as she says in her introduction to this new edition of EarthDance, she honed her writing skills as well as gestated her ideas on a "small pine-forested Greek island." While EarthDance is grounded in a thorough knowledge of Sahtouris' own field of evolutionary biology and a wide-ranging grasp of both science and philosophy, it also draws deeply on her personal experience of having lived among indigenous peoples and gained a profound respect for the traditional science of their cultures.
EarthDance prophetically represents the new and rapidly expanding Post-Darwinian evolutionary biology. Sahtouris explains how, in cycle after cycle, the living entities or "holons" in the realm of Gaia have merged, through negotiation and symbiosis rather than ruthless competition, in a constantly self-creating and re-creating "holarchy" of living systems.
Death even plays a crucial role in this ongoing dance of life. "Every dancer knows," says Sahtouris, "that each dancer can only perform one step at a time; that old steps must be abandoned so that the dancer's body will be free to perform new ones, which may then repeat or change the pattern of old steps." However, it is life, not death, which attracts the passion and vision of the author. She challenges the human species to live as the new biology now recognizes life has evolved, cooperatively and symbiotically rather than "red in tooth and claw." Unlike Edmund O. Wilson or Richard Dawkins, she does not have to explain love and altruism as a "strategy" to gain selfish ends but celebrates them as the very heart of evolution.
The impact of a massive boloid 65 million years ago wiped out all the big dinosaurs. Barring another such catastrophe, it seems likely that the human species is the best candidate for bringing about its own extinction unless, as Sahtouris emphasizes, we grow up as humans and "take the responsibility for using our freedom in healthful ways, to help rebalance the great ongoing dance of Gaian creation and to develop harmonious new patterns within it." Perhaps the most remarkable thing about EarthDance is the way Sahtouris extends her grasp of cosmic, biological, and social evolution into more than simply a vision but a program for restructuring the economic and political forces of our human world from the ground up rather than the top down. With extraordinary insight she sees this restructuring as beginning with the endogenous creativity of the World Wide Web as well as the thousands upon thousands of new "cells" of human creative communion that are springing up all over the world. In one more stage of autopoesis, "self-creation," she notes how all these individuals and groups come together in conferences and seminars to share their insights, pool their talents, and barter their resources. EarthDance is Elisabet Sahtouris' invitation to the entire human species to join the cosmic dance that alone can instill new life into the planetary ballroom we call Earth.
One final observation: Sahtouris does not simply represent the new post-Darwinian biology but is one of the leaders in the new twenty-first century science. In Biology Revisioned, a book he co-authored with Sahtouris, the late Willis Harman called the new science "Wholeness Science" as contrasted with the old "Separateness Science." When you read EarthDance, you are reading "Wholeness Science" in its most elegant, poetic and visionary expression.

All the Earth and All Its Moving Parts

When I was in college the standard joke was that one of the final exam questions would be: construct a model of the universe with all things included with all their interactions. Elisabet Sahtouris comes about as close to doing that as anybody can. And she does it with language most people can understand. This book was so captivating I devoted an entire weekend to reading it.
Starting with the Gaia Principle the author leads us through the evolution of planet Earth; the key biological and chemical events that eventually led to life as we know it; the philosophy, politics, and religion that have shaped Homo Sapiens' environmental policies; and finally provides some sound advice for how humans should live in Earth's ecosystems. Of course it is impossible to construct a model of the universe with all its interactions in a single book or even a single lifetime; but, the author hits all the high points with plenty of easy to understand examples. Her ability to explain complicated physics and biology in terms any laymen can understand is out standing.
The author's main point is directly attached to the Gaia Principle and that Earth will survive anything humans do to it. However, humans may not survive what we do to ourselves. She makes a very convincing case that Homo Sapiens are in the very early stages of their evolution and we have yet to figure out how to use our technology correctly. All other successful life forms have learned to create symbiotic relationships with other living creatures. Modern man is not there yet. Ironically so called primitive societies had it figured out before we brought the industrial revolution on to ourselves. In fact the case is made that Gaia, or the Earth's sense of what is good for itself, may actually be trying to get rid of these destructive, industrialized humans. An argument I have heard before, but never so convincingly as in this book.
The reader who has not studied some Greek philosophy, modern physics, and eastern religion may feel a bit lost. In fact may even question much of what the author states. However the extensive bibliography, of important works by well known scientists and sociologists, should indicate to any reader that the message in this book is well thought out and well documented.
The readers who have not done so already may wish to read Fritjof Capra's The Tao of Physics and Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel. The former explains the connection between modern nuclear physics and eastern religions, and the latter why some civilizations managed to over come and dominate other civilizations. Both of these subjects are important to Earthdance and discussed in some detail by the author.
This book should be mandatory reading in every environmental science or environmental management curriculum. I wish I could make it mandatory reading for every politician.

a great book on living systems

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Certainly there is no shortage of books describing what the human race is doing to itself and the other organisms that inhabit our planet. It can be depressing reading most of the time. This book, however, managed to put all of this into context, and surprisingly, made me feel that all is as it should be in the grand scheme. It is a wonderful synthesis of past and present scientific revelations, intuition, and even religion. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

You Can Just Hear Rafe's Sexy Accent!

Reading the dialogue, I could just hear Rafe's sexy, exotic accent as he romanced the mysterious V during an amazing one night stand. I could also really feel his shock and bewilderment as he found out who V was and how this was going to affect his whole plan for revenge.

Violet was struggling to be a strong woman when all her brother wanted to do was protect her and her ranch employees just saw her as one of the guys. No wonder she needed to get out of town and have a fling with a handsome and exotic stranger. I think Anderson showed realistically the rush of emotions that Violet went through when she found out she was pregnant and that the father was her brother's friend/enemy.

This is a great resolution to many of the questions in the Samson Oil storyline in this series of the Texas Cattleman's Club, and now I'm curious about Rafe's sister who gets her own story in the series.

Very good book. Violet has had enough of her brother's overprotectiveness, and needs to get away for an evening. So she dresses up and heads to the next town, where she meets a super sexy guy named Ben. Sparks fly immediately and they spend an incredible night together, agreeing to keep it simple and anonymous. A few months later she's dismayed to discover she's pregnant, with no idea how to find the father.

Rafe, aka "Ben" has come to Texas to carry out the revenge he has spent years planning. While in college, his best friend Mac had slept with Rafe's sister, causing dishonor to her and Rafe's entire family. Rafe's father held him responsible and put Rafe through years of unimaginable horror in retaliation. All that kept him going was his plans for revenge. His brief encounter with the mysterious woman is a distraction he can't allow, but getting her off his mind is difficult.

Then Violet's brother Mac brings home his old college friend, who has come to repair their relationship. Both Violet and Rafe are stunned to see each other, Rafe even more so when she gets him alone to tell him of her pregnancy. Rafe is conflicted, because he is happy to see her again, but what will that mean for his plans?

I was torn about Rafe. He first appeared in Lone Star Holiday Proposal as the person behind the land purchases. His plan is revealed, but not the reason. Here we finally learn why, but it doesn't really show him in a good light. I liked the fact that he was happy about the baby and wanted to take care of Violet, but he also was thinking of the ways that he could use the situation toward his revenge. As I learned more about what had happened to him after the college incident, I ached for the way it had affected him.

I liked Violet. She loves her brother, but is incredibly frustrated by the way he treats her. She is smart and does a fantastic job as ranch manager, but Mac still sees her as the young girl devastated by their parents' deaths. Though stunned by her pregnancy, she is completely capable of raising the child on her own. When she sees Rafe again, she is happy to tell him of the baby, but also wary of him. For all that he says the right things, she gets the feeling that he's keeping something from her.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship. The sparks are still there and stronger than ever. Violet accepts that Rafe wants to be involved, but insists that she is capable of doing it on her own if necessary. Rafe's initial plan is to woo her and make her fall in love with him, causing her to choose him over her brother. But the more time he spends with her, the more conflicted he is. He realizes that his plans will hurt her, but he can't give up the revenge he has waited so long for. Meanwhile, Violet is falling deeper for Rafe. He listens to her and sees how good she is at what she does. From things he has said, she senses that there hasn't been much love in his life, and is determined to show him what could be. Violet is the first to suspect the truth of what he is doing, and the knowledge devastates her. Her confrontation with him is heartbreaking. I loved seeing how Rafe suffers, torn between his anguish at hurting her and satisfaction at his success.

Enter a surprise player, who lays some truth in front of Rafe that makes him realize how wrong he has been. What he goes through as he looks at the past through new eyes is a life changing moment. I loved his big moment at the end, as he has to face both Mac and Violet. There were definitely some tense moments there. What followed was very emotional, as Rafe experienced something he never had before. I loved Violet's reaction to some of the things he said. It made me laugh, as the independent Texas cowgirl really came out at those moments.

There are a couple more stories to come in the series, including Mac's, which I am really looking forward to. I do wonder what Rafe is going to do with all that land he bought.

Not to be used as your sole reference for schematic symbols

This book was written back in the early '70s. I would not recommend using this book as your main reference for schematic symbols. I was hoping to get that sort of information out of this book, but came disappointed.
After 30 years, the electronics industry changed rapidly, thus not having the most up-to-date symbols.
The book is not 100% awful as I wrote above. This book does contain some "refresher" information, such as digital logic circuits, RCL circuits, etc. Just some things you may want to read up on if you forgotten.

Who thought what, when, where, and why...

The history of Christian theology, and thus the history of Christianity, is inextricably linked with the history of the way that Christian have read the Bible. This has not been consistent over the course of the last few millennia, and having a grasp on this history of Biblical interpretation is essential for anyone who wants to keep up with or make sense of the rapid pace of change in the field of biblical interpretation today.
Perhaps at no other period in history has the number of ways the Bible can be read, interpreted, and used been as varied as it is today. This can be easily seen by a simple examination of the table of contents of Donald McKim's 'Historical Handbook of Major Biblical Interpreters'. The number of major interpreters from just the nineteenth and twentieth centuries outnumbers the interpreters from the preceeding 18 centuries.
A word on the word interpretation -- this has become a dirty word of sorts by some denominations, who pride themselves on not interpreting the Bible, but taking it literally. However, as one can see by examining the history of biblical exegesis, taking the scripture literally is in fact an interpretation. McKim doesn't (nor do I) discount the historicity or validity of literal interpretation as an expression of biblical interpretation.
Christianity has been interpreting scriptures since the very beginning; even Jesus interpreted the Hebrew scriptures for disciples and others. As the canon of the Bible came to be solidified in form, the work of interpreting this centuries-to-millennia-old texts for the emerging Christendom took on major importance, and was seen for the longest time as the primary (and sometimed exclusive) responsibility of the church.
However, there has always been a give and take between academic and formally-trained interpretation and more personal avenues of interpretation. 'The practice of biblical exegesis takes place at a host of levels by a wide array of people. Indeed, whenever anyone reads the Bible and explicates its meaning, biblical interpretation is taking place.'
McKim's volume focusses on the most significant interpreters, as defined by those who have had impact on others following and the raising of important issues. Alas, as McKim comments in the preface, there are many other interpreters who might be included, but for space considerations. As it is, this is a lengthy, 630+ page reference volume with relatively small print, presented in a double-column format.
The sections are arranged in chronological order, so that for the 'sit-down-and-read-it-straight-through' reader, the development over time of biblical interpretation will be seen easily (however, it is not a strict chronology -- the individual articles in the sections are arranged alphabetically by interpreter). Attached to each article is a bibliography, broken into two parts: Works of the interpreter being highlighted, and Studies which focus on or analyse the work of the interpreter. The book is also cross-referenced for easy use to see developmental strands that do not occur in direct chronological succession.
Nearly 100 contributors, major scholars in the study of the language, historical period, or person being highlighted, have been included in this work. Interpreters are divided into the following broad categories:
Biblical Interpretation in the Early Church
Biblical Interpretation in the Middle Ages
Biblical Interpretation in the 16th and 17th Centuries
Biblical Interpretation in the 18th and 19th Centuries
Biblical Interpretation in 20th Century Europe
Biblical Interpretation in 20th Century North America
From Athanasius (an early church father in Alexandria) to contemporary interpreters such as Walter Brueggemann and Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, essays on interpreters includes a short biography, and proceeds to give critical descriptions of the major aspects of their work.
This is not only a valuable reference for students and scholars, but an ideal volume for the arm-chair theologian, or really anyone who is interested in learning more about the Bible and how it has been viewed through time.
With such a large number of contributors, it is difficult to find a 'representative' example of writing to illustrate. However, McKim is no stranger to the editing of major reference works, having been editor also of the Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms and the Encyclopedia of the Reformed Faith, both of which are highly regarded for their authority, comprehensiveness and clarity.
McKim does address the need for further volumes which expand beyond the scope of this work. 'Studies of women interpreters are underrepresented, as are studies of those who are not Western, white males. This volume is clearly oriented toward those who have produced significant work in the Western branch of the Christian church and whose writings have, on the whole, emerged from Europe or North America. This is where predominant writings have been produced since the Middle Ages. Further books should one day be created to highlight the contributions of those not represented in this volume.'
Despite this limitation, this is nonetheless a necessary volume for the understanding of biblical interpretation issues, and can serve both as a handy reference or a narrative study.

A mammoth enterprise.

This work is huge. It is double-columned and covers the major biblical interpreters of the church' history. If you need a comprehensive reference work this is it. From Athanasius to G.E Wright. It is easily one of my top five favorite books I had the pleasure of reading in 99.

It's big, expensive, and worth every penny

This is one of the standard texts of biblical interpretation.

Before every era, there is a short chapter describing the major themes that were debated during that time period. For example, in the earliest era, the chapter compares Origen and Augustine's ideas. Then there is a list of the major interpreters listed in alphabetical order, with a short biography of their main arguments and an even shorter biography of the man discussed.

It covers the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and then jumps to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Those looking for the newest themes in biblical interpretation will be disappointed, however. In the 20th century the biographies seem to stop with about 1970. Other than that, this is invaluable.

I got a point and a half off - one wrong answer and an uncapitalized noun (my greatest struggle! )

A little more than a month into the semester, I was hit by a car and ended up missing a month of class lectures. The way the Netzwerk book is structured and the fact that I also studied A1 level using Netzwerk, I was able to stay caught up week-by-week while studying at home and staying connected with my instructor. My first test back to class, I got a point and a half off - one wrong answer and an uncapitalized noun (my greatest struggle!). In the end, I got an A- in the class and I really credit the way the Netzwerk textbooks are set up for my success.

About the Author
Anna Sewell was born in 1820 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. At the age of fourteen she injured both of her ankles in an accident, which meant that she could never walk properly again. Because of this she relied heavily on travelling in horse-drawn carriages, and it was from here that her love of horses grew. In 1871 Anna began writing a book aimed at encouraging more humane treatment of horses. Owing to her failing health the story took nearly seven years to complete but was eventually published in 1877. Sadly, Anna never got to know of the huge success of Black Beauty, her only book, as she died in 1878, five months after the book's publication.

I was pleased to be given the opportunity to review the third edition of Comprehensive Clinical Nephrology, the goal of which is to provide 'comprehensive coverage' of contemporary nephrology.
All chapters have been extensively revised and updated. Furthermore, a new chapter on Intensive Care Unit Nephrology has been added.
Whilst primarily aimed at clinicians, the superb readability of the text, combined with excellent illustrations, broadens its appeal to the wider renal care community. The CD-ROM, containing images from the textbook, may be used for educational purposes.
In conclusion, this is an excellent clinical and educational resource That I can thoroughly recommend to all members of the multidisciplinary team involved in the day-to-day care and management of renal patients.

This is one of the most easy-to-read nephrology text books I have come across. Although it was bought to be used as a reference book, very often I end up reading the whole chapter or even chapters as the text simply flows and effortlessly makes the subject very interesting. It manages to make complex subjects easy to understand and interesting without making it simplistic. It also provides an excellent overview of all the relevant clinical studies and guidelines. I would thoroughly recommend it.

Excellent reference book for training nephrologists

This is an extremely useful book that is an asset for every training nephrologist but also as a reference to anyone involved in Nephrology. Well organised chapters and excellent illustrations. Accompanied by a CD-ROM that carries all the figures that can be used for presentations. I would strongly recommend it.
