Frederick Albert Cook (June 10, 1865 - August 5, 1940) was an American explorer and physician noted for his claims of achieving the first summit of Mount McKinley, in September 1906, and having reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908, which would have been a year before Robert Peary. Both claims have been largely discredited. Later, Dr. Cook was a founding member of the Arctic Club and Explorers Club. Robert Edwin Peary, Sr. (May 6, 1856 - February 20, 1920) was an American explorer who claimed to have led the first expedition, on April 6, 1909, to reach the geographic North Pole.

Peary's claim was widely accepted for most of the 20th century, rather than the competing claim by Frederick Cook who said he got there a year earlier. More recently, historians generally believe Cook did not reach the pole, and there are grave doubts that Peary did, though he may have been as close as five miles. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (February 1874 - January 5, 1922) was an Anglo-Irish polar explorer and one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.

In January 1909, as leader of the Nimrod Expedition, he and three companions made a southern march which established a record-farthest south latitude at 88 degrees 23' S, some 97 geographical from the South Pole, the closest convergence in exploration history up to that time. For this achievement, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home.

Confusing at times, mainly one long space battle

Not as good as previous volumes in my opinion, this volume deals mainly with a long space battle, the causes of which are not totally clear. Lots of colour and fighting removes a lot of the person-to-person (being to being!) inter-action which is a shame. However the story is still entertaining and worth a look, especially if you've read the previous volumes.

The best thing about this volume is that it looks as if it's the end of the series, not that I have anything against the series beyond my criticisms above but it doesn't drag on forever as the Invincible series has been.

This was a good basic guideline for understanding the biblical principles of how god speaks through dreams. I was hoping for more guidance on how to receive interpretation from God for the dreams we have. Dreams vary greatly and are often very personal to the dreamer, so while the interpretations in the book were useful i have had many experiences in dreams which were not presented in the book. Maybe a part two to provide more information on how to address Heaven for help interpreting your dreams.

If I leaned nothing from this book I learned not to take eating in dreams lightly or sexual dreams. I have seen how the devil use my dreams to attack me when I am not conscious of what is going on. I now guard my dreams and learn to destroy anything I did not gain victory over when I was a sleep after I awake. It is a very resouceful book on dream understanding.

The History of Art, explained!

Carol Strickland has written one of the most entertaining, comprehensive, and comprehensible books on art history currently on the market. Not only does she provide soundbites on the meaning, style, and creation of selected works (which are produced in beautiful, truthful images) she gives information about the lives of the artists. This book is probably one of the most inclusive and up-to-date works on this subject you will find. I have found it extraordinarily helpful in studying for the AP Art History exam and for the class in art history I am taking. (Recommended: reading the book's summary and volunteering your information from it in class.) If you are looking for a book to help you in that test, look no further. Even for those reading the subject merely for fun, Strickland's writing style is easy and fun to read, and bridges the often yawning gap between the art world and the real world. She shows a true gift for taking an overwhelming, sprawling subject and making ordered, objective sense of it.

I used to teach undergraduate Art History. I wouldn't use this book as a textbook but it is serviceable for someone who wants a sketch of art throughout the ages. I.e., it isn't too academic.

Excellent used condition, book. So happy I bought this instead of a much more expensive new one. Also, it's kind of like a cheat sheet for Art History. It covers a lot of info in small, understandable pieces. I am going to use it as a supplement for teaching high school Art History.

Love the Logan McRae series and this was one of ...

Love the Logan McRae series and this was one of the best. Action packed and full of personal and detective drama. Some doors have shut in Logan's life, with several needing the closure, other closure causing him pain. Not mentioning here what doors are what so no spoiler alerts needed. The character development in this series is exceptional and they are all so interesting. I wait impatiently for the book 11 to see what new challenges Logan has going forward. Thank you Stuart MacBride for one of the best detective series out there.

Book 10 and still going strong. Stuart MacBride has created the best hero, Logan McRae is by no means perfect and he doesn't always win, maybe he doesn't always make the best choices but he sure does try to do the right thing.
If you haven't read any of this series now is the time to start. This one of the best series written.

This is an exceptional series, and for the growth of characters, the humanity of the circumstance and the fact that this may be the end of the series, or a new beginning, leaves me strangely satisfied. It takes a hell of a writer to pull off what Stuart MacBride has done with Logan and Steel. I've enjoyed every word of it!

The Positive Deviant

This book by life long sustainability leader Sara Parkin is a must read for those who are concerned with humanities fate as we overwhelm our Earths capacity to support our material economies. We need to remember that human economics is a subset of ecology, and that the environment does not need saving - we do!

This book, written in the context of a Masters Leadership programme, sets out a sound theoretical frame, then moves to leadership training and onto pragmatic action for leaders at every level and scale. The scientific back story is clearly developed with appropriate citations.

No science, no considered opinions, just a bunch of business bashing, hysterical wailing. Don't bother.

If you want to read a good book on the subject read: The World in 2050: Four Forces Shaping Civilization's Northern Future.

I sent it back after trying to read the first chapter.

Shaikh al-Islam Imam al-Muwaffaq ibn Qudama (A.H. 541-620) was one of the luminaries of his day and age. Born in the town of Jamma'il in Nablus in Palestine, he emigrated to Damascus with his family at the age of eight, after the Crusaders had seized control of his country.

Studying at first under the tutelage of his father, Shaikh Abu 'l-'Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Qudama, he learned the rudiments of the religious sciences, and the texts of the Hanbali school of jurisprudence, including the Mukhtasar [Compendium] of al-Kharaqi. At the next stage he studied under various of the Shaikhs of Damascus and continued to make progress in learning, until he reached the age of twenty.

Then, between the years A.H.560 and 561 he embarked on an educational expedition to Baghdad. At the outset of his career, al-Muwaffaq spent a brief period in the presence of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani. Under the Shaikh, then in the ninetieth year his life, he studied the Mukhtasar [Compendium] of al-Kharaqi at the level of understanding and meticulous scrutiny.

Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir completed his earthly life shortly after that, so al-Muwaffaq turned to the Shaikh of the Hanbalis and the leading jurist of 'Iraq, Nasih al-Islam Abu 'l-Fath Nasr ibn Fityan ibn Matar an-Nahrawani, well-known as Ibn al-Muna (A.H. 477-564). Under him he studied the jurisprudence of the school of Imam Ahmad [ibn Hanbal]. After four years in Baghdad he returned to Damascus and there he preoccupied himself with the composition of his great commentary (al-Mughni) on al-Kharaqi's Mukhtasar

I love it

Well there are barley any books on Hanbali Fiqh in English so this book is a great place to start. This book talks about what the Hanbali fiqh is through one of the greatest Hanabli Sages, Imam Muwaffaq. The book goes over pretty much one needs to know about his fiqh. This would be fasting, how to pray, trade and etc. The book is a great read, it isn't too long and it's easy to understand. There are some things that should be noted. Mukhtar Holland passed away before a revision of the book could be done. A piece of paper will be sent with the book. A couple of things were translated wrong but on the piece of paper it tells you how it should have been translated. To my knowledge it was only two or three things.

The book is great for those interested in the Hanbali Fiqh. It is a beginners book but certain things don't have clarification. For example when grasping the hands for prayer it is under the naval but the fingers aren't laced like the Hanafis but more of a grabbing manner. Things like this were not discussed but I feel that is what the more advanced books are for.

I wanted to add something new in after covering part of this book with a Hanbali teacher. There is a something really major to note that if the reader does not have a strong (VERY STRONG) background in Hanbali Fiqh and in Arabic one might take this the complete opposite direction. For example in this commentary it talks about that raising the finger 7 times in Tasshud while the Hanbali thought on this is to raise the finger and not put it down until the end of prayer. However the way it is worded in the book makes you think that the index finger must be raised 7 times while the background information is Mabbab if I am not mistaken meaning not to raise it up and down.

About the Author

Ohad Samet is an entrepreneur and executive in the financial services industry, having worked as a manager, founder, and executive in various companies. Ohad started his career as manager of the fraud analysis group for FraudSciences, a fraud prevention startup for high risk payments. After FraudSciences was acquired by PayPal in 2008, he worked in various roles for the company, among them the manager of the new ventures risk team, in charge of risk management for PayPal's Digital Goods, Mobile and Adaptive Payments products. Ohad left PayPal in 2010 to work on two projects; one of them, Signifyd, is now a leading fraud prevention vendor working with Fortune 500 companies to reduce payments fraud. At Klarna, Ohad served as Chief Risk Officer, in charge of granting real-time short-term credit on Klarna's $2.5B of annual payments volume. In 2013 Ohad left Klarna to focus on new projects in the financial services industry.

It is easy to read and it has a very easy way to get you into how to think about risk management when online payments are in consideration. I found a way to structure my approach to the topic.

Great introduction with a lot of practical advice

This book gives a great overview of risk management for online payments. It has a very practical approach and gives the reader hands-on advice on how to build a strong risk management team as well as how to run it successfully.

I especially appreciated the detailed comparison points the writer suggests, such as reasonable review rates for both new and mature markets/segments etc.

I recommend this book to everyone interested in risk management as well as all professionals in the online payments market, where a good understanding of risk management is beneficial for everyone.
