RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON

Danlo wi Soli Ringess has returned from the Vild, the first lightship pilot to escape that hellish region of fractured space and deadly supernovas where giant computer-gods make war on each other.

But the Civilized Worlds face their own threat of war. A fanatical cult has seized the fabled city of Neverness and plans to take over the galaxy. Though the cult worships Danlo's long-lost father as a god, he casts his lot with its opponents--and is sent to Neverness to try to reason with its leaders. Instead he must fight to survive: against the warrior-poet who has vowed to take his life, the madman with a star-killing weapon and a grim ultimatum, the charismatic leader of the cult--once Danlo's greatest friend, now his fiercest enemy--and his own unbreakable vow never to harm a living thing.

A contemporary master of speculative fiction and incomparable world-building, David Zindell continues his monumental epic that sweeps us from the outer reaches of the galaxy to the inner depths of the human mind, a stirring cosmic drama of a man of peace torn between the implacable cosmic forces of divinity and destruction.

Simply astounding and mind boggling !
By Niki
My last two weeks have been most stimulating as I finished this remarkable series. From the first book, "Neverness" to "The Broken God" to "The Wild" and finally "War in Heaven", I just could not put the series down. Yes there are times when Zindell tend to be repetitive in his philosophical views but the intensity of the story and characters more than makes up for it. "Neverness" is simply exquisite with spectacular world building and intriguing characters. The protagonist, Mallory, a brilliant and complex personality is definitely one sci-fi character I will remember. "The Broken God" is simply profound though at times Zindell tends to be overboard with his philosophical views. At first I miss Mallory's narration as the first person. However by the middle of "The Broken God", I found myself engrossed with Danlo's fate and liking this protagonist immensely. From the negative reviews of "The Broken God", I perceive that some readers have stopped reading the series due to the slow pace of "The Broken God". That is a real pity because no sci-fi die-heart should miss "The Wild". Here Zindell displays his remarkable world building skills and vivid imagination once again. The pace here is fast and I found myself imprisoned by Danlo's adventures. "War in Heaven" is equally though provoking and captivating. Danlo's loss here is intensely written and I found myself moved to tears. "War in Heaven" is a sastisfying conclusion to the series as Danlo completes his soul searching and finally "sees" his role in the universe or should I say universes. As usual with any great stories, I am sad that the end comes too quickly. I will miss Danlo, Mallory, Soli, Bardo and the Solid State Entity but am glad to have discovered Zindell's world. I am please to add Zindell to my list of must read writers and look forward to reading his new fantasy series. It is a pity that this brilliant writer is not more widely recognized.

Not "Neverness"
By DavidNewYork
David Zindell's first novel in this series, "Neverness," is nothing short of astounding. His imagination - and the incredibly rich world that has sprung forth from it - is boundless. But "War in Heaven," the fourth and final book in the "Requiem for Homo Sapiens" series, does not match up to the breathtaking "Neverness," nor even to its own promising beginning.
At the start of this book, the protagonist Danlo wi Soli Ringess has just returned from a perilous mission. His goal was to convince a well-meaning but badly misguided religious order (the "Architects") to change its doctrine of advocating endless procreation - a doctrine which is slowly but surely killing the galaxy. Danlo is successful, but at a price: a splinter group (the "Iviomils") determined to preserve the old ways has broken off & threatens terrible violence.
Danlo, back at "home," finds himself not in the city of Neverness but in Lightstone, a new city on a new planet. Danlo's enlightened academic Order has created a mirror of itself on a distant, hidden planet as a hedge against the possible destruction of Icefall, where Neverness and the original Order are located. Soon, we find out, a new schism is brewing between the new & old Orders, with religion (this time, a controversial new faith called "Ringism" has made inroads into the old Order) again being the cause.
And finally we learn that even the galaxy's gods are at war. A super-entity called the Silicon God has slain two of his kind, and the gods who oppose him are banding together to stop him.
In short, as the title rather explosively proclaims, there is war in heaven.
But we get to see little of it. The Architects and Iviomils barely appear for the rest of the book, and except for a couple of oblique references, the gods don't show up at all. The two academic Orders do fight a pair of bloody, spectacular space battles, but nearly all of the "action" (such as it is) is centered on Neverness. Danlo (who, as an ambassador to Neverness, is utterly unable to prevent the impending war) spends hundreds of pages in a virtual holding pattern - he does almost nothing except bide time while hatching a new plan.
I won't reveal any more of the plot. I will say that the book has its merits - Zindell's world is still intensely interesting, and he still has some new, mind-bending ideas to share. (How about an ethereal ecosystem that thrives in the near-vacuum at the edge of space, or a perverse, megalomaniacal god intent on consuming all the matter and energy in the universe?)
Just expect some disappointment after the first 150 pages, but enjoy the ride anyway.

STILL answering questions with questions
By Michael Battaglia
Danlo alas keeps this sporadically annoying habit that's so much a part of his nature throughout what I think is probably the last in the series of books that began with Neverness (for everyone but Danlo) or The Broken God (for Danlo himself). While the last book was a strange, yet oddly intoxicating mixture of philosophy and SF, it lacked the intrinsic cohension that the first book had somehow managed to convey, maybe because of the sublime setting of the city of Neverness, about the finest and best detailed futuristic city in all of SF. Here, after a brief start, we're back in Neverness as Danlo tries to keep war from breaking out and tries, to various degrees of success, to also piece together all the fragments of problems he's either been involved in or created. Zindell sets up quite the dilemma for all the protagonists, not only has the Order of Pilots fragmented and is threatening to fight the other (one part's in exile, the other part is falling sway to a new religion started by Danlo's former best friend and based on the fact that his father might have become a god), the Warrior-Poets are trying to kill anyone who might become a god, Neverness is falling into riots as the Ringists are killing all the nonbelievers. Danlo has never seemed more human and less human here, his very much tries to keep to his vow not to harm anyone and for the most part keeps it, but he's sorely tempted otherwise. He runs into old friends and enemies and enemies who used to be friends (yeah, we're talking to you, Hanuman). This is the most brutal of the three books and Danlo doesn't have an easy time of things, however, as exhilerating as it is to have him succeed, the efforts almost make him seem superhuman and as the book winds to a close, you wonder if ANYTHING can stop this guy. Some points of the book also fall prey to Philosopy Syndrome, where Zindell drowns you in pretty prose depicting Danlo debating some inner struggle, which while great to read and has some absolutely beautiful writing, makes you want to shout at the book "Get on with it already!". But I can't say I didn't like this book, heck, I more than just liked it, this was a satisfying end to the cycle that builds on what came before and takes it to new places. Danlo is one of the best characters to appear in the last decade, and the rest of the people are all lovingly detailed, no one is all good, no one is all bad, everyone has reasons and motivations, some you agree with, some you don't. The clarity and scope of Zindell's ideas, enough to make you think without making your head hurt, are fascinating and his attention to detail, both in dialogue and description and philosophy, will make you want to read the entire series again and again. Even with Danlo's annoying question habit, this has to rank as one of the finest series of the last couple of years, without a doubt.

Great Resource!
By 4daughters
I have been teaching math for 10 years and read this book for a graduate class. It is such a great resource for new and veteran teachers! It offers realistic ways for teachers to move away from the "traditional" way most teach with direct instruction and move toward student-centered problem solving strategies. I'm hoping the cost of it goes down so it is more accessible for people because it is changing the way I teach!

Amazing resource
By Erin
This book is an amazing resource for an elementary school teachers. I had the pleasure of taking a college course taught by one of the writers, using this book. This is truly one of the most valuable college textbooks I have used. I imagine that I will be referencing it several hundred times in my career. It's great! One of the best features is that each chapter has a list of children's literature that goes with the concept taught! So helpful!

stability; however, you cannot save children
from the experiences they are about to have

Accessing Dimensional Energies, Communicating With
The Pleiadians, and Navigating These Changing Times
by Christine Day is a forward looking book written
to deal with the New Age which was born at the
conclusion of 2012 according to the author. Some of
the principles in the book date back to the Atlantians

who have a firm belief with regard to the intuitive
side of life and living. The book comes with a website

galaxy itself.

New Age concepts, theologians, philosophers and historians.

By Johan Claus
It is a book to be done, several times, each time you discover a new layer of the Love in your Heart, of the Light that is coming down massively, of the support of the extra-terrestrians in our awakening process. This second book of Christine Day is even better and stronger than her first!

Paul's Damascus Road experience put into perspective
By Wayne Symes
The conversion of Paul on the road to Damascus has captured the imagination of many artists and writers down through the centuries. Indeed, the idea of a `Damascus road experience' has become part of the English language. However, it has also been the source of much scholarly debate and critique from an historical, sociological or psychological perspective (witness Krister Stendahl's 1963 essay `The Apostle Paul and the Introspective Conscience of the West'). This book is designed to examine the biblical material and ascertain the impact his experience might have had on Paul's understanding of Christology, Eschatology, his Gentile Mission, Justification, Reconciliation, Covenant Theology, the Mosaic Law, the Holy Spirit, Women and Ethics. On the whole the authors do a good job (although I cannot agree with Donaldson's views of Paul's Gentile Mission, which work so hard to avoid the idea that Paul was given the mission by Christ at conversion that he misses the mark altogether). The material is well thought through and, despite some of the technical sounding titles, the language is clear and understandable. Seyoon Kim on Reconciliation and Gordon Fee on the Holy Spirit were particularly thought provoking. This book is well worth a read by pastors, theological students or educated lay people who want to think about the impact that the scriptural record of Paul's conversion has had upon their understanding of the Christian faith.

Great Selection
By Steven R. McEvoy
This book is an almost ideal start to a selected reading course on Pauline Theology. However, with all of its inherent strength, it does have some weaknesses. In the paper that follows, I will examine some of the strengths and weaknesses. The book's focus on the theological issues in Pauline writings is well rounded and sagely approached. It does have the problem of being intended as an "introduction to concerns of Christians today" (Back Cover) while it is seemingly written more for the academic than for your common theologian. Some of the articles are superbly written and are self-contained papers on individual topics. Others make too many references to other articles or books by the authors, thus leaving gaps in their arguments or presuppositions.

One of the major issues I have with the book is that it is published and/or marketed for the average Christian today. The book is many things, but this is not one of them. As an undergraduate student and lay theologian, I struggled to work through this text the first time, and even the second read still required hard work. The back cover states that the book is "Written in a style easily accessible to ministers, students and lay people ... while also speaking directly to the pastoral needs of people in today's church." A student in the MTS program at McMaster where the papers were given at a symposium stated: "I was about the only graduate student in attendance, and there were never any undergraduates." This series was focused on the academic at the doctoral or post-doctoral level. The result is a book that generally will be out of reach of the intended market as stated on the book itself. Though it is an excellent book, it is not an introduction to Paul, His thought, and his theology, or the effects of his conversion on his thought and his theology.

The book is subtitled The Impact of Paul's Conversion on His Life, Thought and Ministry and therefore focuses on the results of the Damascus experience. Some of the contributors offer a strong, well-balanced examination their topics within that framework. Others over stretch the boundaries, and take too much license in the interpretation of events, or in establishing Paul's pre-conversion beliefs.

Judith M. Gundry-Volf writes one of the weaker articles in this book, from my perspective, on "Women." Much can be said about Paul and his views on women, however Gundry-Volf bases her thoughts on those changes on comparisons to other Jewish authors, in particular Sirach, and Philo. To do a comparison of Jewish writings, and suppose that Paul's pre-conversion views would be similar sounds reasonable, but it is speculation. She looks primarily at the Jewish background, yet Paul would have also been strongly influenced by Hellenistic ideas. We cannot know with complete certainty where in the range of Jewish or Hellenistic thought Paul's views would fall. While the topic of Paul and women is a valid and important pursuit in Pauline studies, in my opinion, this article does not fit within the boundaries of this work.

The strongest article, in my opinion, is Bruce Corley's "History of Interpretation." His strong use of a broad historical impact is what intrigued me most. He uses a very wide scope of vision to include literature, plays, sermons, and artwork, as interpretations of the work of Paul. Corley uses modern psychology to analyze both Paul and the Damascus experience. This allows him to present a broad range of opinion in the field of the history of interpretation. His use of archetypes in interpreting and relating to Paul resonates with my own wide range of interests.

In his paper on `Christology,' from my perspective, Richard Longnecker raises some of the most important questions in Pauline studies at this time. I appreciate his strong concentration on Paul's focus on Jesus the Messiah as well as his clear outlining of Paul's rejection of Jesus based on preconceived pre-conversion Christology. Longnecker states: "That what Paul experienced in that event was a change of commitment, values, and identity that was sudden and unexpected" (p.26). This launches us into the whole area of "From Damascus." Paul's writings and actions were thus shaped by his changed attitudes. This premise forms the basis for the whole series of lectures on the results of the Damascus experience. Longnecker, as the organizer and coordinator of the series, sets the tempo and mood for the rest of the papers that follow. Longnecker touches on each of the topics in this collection except the issue of women. It is a masterful essay, showing the strength of a true wordsmith. It is unfortunate he does not write a second to tie the book back together at the conclusion.

What I appreciate most about Marshall's contribution is its conservative bent, and the premise that while Paul's theology did grow and change, the basic framework is there from the beginning: "So of the key elements of Paul's thinking are already present in his earliest writings (p.44)." I strongly agree with his opinion that while the Damascus experience had a strong and immediate impact on Paul's thought that took time to process and develop, the initial change was large, quick and the direct result of having met the risen Jesus. Marshall's view is best summed up by: "To the extent that there was a change in emphasis as we move chronologically through the letters of Paul. That is to say, the prominence given to the parousa is 1st Thessalonians is not found in later letters. There is, therefore, development but not transformation" (p.51). An idea with which I agree most wholeheartedly and have observed from my own readings. (Steve, unless for some reason you feel you really need to include this quote I would leave it out. The line of thought is stronger without it even with the longer version. If you still want to include a comment that makes reference to your own other readings, you could revise the sentence before it to say: My own readings lead me to strongly agree with his opinion that while the Damascus ... etc.)

In the area of omissions, I believe the biggest gap in this series is dealing with Paul's perception of self in light of the Damascus event. I believe that the issues of conversion, transformation, alteration, calling, apostleship, mission and ministry are all key issues in Pauline theology and thought. However, this collection barely touches any of these topics. If the book was written as an introduction to Paul meant for laity as well as clergy and academics, than this is a great omission. The idea that many believe Paul left the Jewish faith at Damascus while just as many argue He remained a Pharisee till his death leave us with `blanks' in relation to understanding these articles. It is the necessary framework that allows the other articles to become the flesh in creating our view of Paul.

In conclusion, I offer the title of this review: `Introduction & Insight, or Overload & Overlooked.' Each of these four words represents a portion of my view of this work. It is a great introduction for a selected readings course on Paul but, in most cases, it will be overload for the average undergraduate or lay theologian who picks it up to get a grasp of current issues in Pauline theology and thought. It does however provide great insight into many of these issues from a more academic perspective. It is well thought out and well rounded in the issues it presents, and in the interpretations of the individual authors, but there are some items that have been overlooked. In order to make this work more accessible to the larger audience for which it is supposed to be intended, I would recommend a new introduction dealing with the issue of "What was the Damascus Experience?" as well as a concluding paper that brings together the academic issues with the reality of daily Christian living.

Straightforward, Highly Useful
By Marti in Allen
This is a book for UX designer/developers who need straight talk and solid visual examples of Android UI best practices. Unlike another reviewer, I did *not* expect this book to contain code samples; in fact, I would have been annoyed if it had as there are plenty of resources that discuss Android development. What I needed, and what this book delivered beautifully, were real world UI solutions that could be immediately applied to improve my application designs.

The discussions and examples provided are particularly useful if you are a designer/developer who also works on iOS apps. Starting from necessary changes to the launch icon, the book moves step-by-step through the various elements and interactions. making comparisons between major mobile operating systems along the way.

I gave the book five stars because it delivered precisely what I wanted: State the pattern name; tell me how it works; show me examples; tell me when, where and why to use it; and warn me when I need to be careful. It isn't filled with buzzwords, business-speak or theoretical discussions -- which I found quite refreshing for a change.

Note: In the spirit of full disclosure, I did attend the author's rapid prototyping seminar during SXSW 2013. However, I have attended hundreds of industry presentations over the years and have never felt the need to give sterling book reviews to every single author.

Accessible, entertaining read for all
By Amazon Customer
I received the book when I took a two-day work shop with the author. I enjoyed the workshop and materials so much I ultimately signed on to work more with the company.

Perhaps some of you will find this review helpful. I will point out a few things that might be hard to notice from the Amazon preview:

COLOR. I read the Kindle version which is in color. I found the color helpful especially when he referred to some examples like Southwest Airlines that used color for groupings. The book version is not in color.

MANUAL. It can be read cover to cover but it also functions like a reference manual with repeating sections for every pattern like when to use, cautions, tablet considerations and visual examples. I found the consistency helpful especially with unfamiliar patterns.

CRITICAL. It's not just a manual. The author has a point of view. I found it helpful that the book wasn't toting the company line. The author was honest when he thought the Android standards were wrong. He gave clear reasons when and where to depart from the Google rule book. I felt like I could trust the feedback.

HUMOR. There are parts that are laugh out loud funny. My favorite is the Sit orSquat sections around EULAs. The author has a quirky sense of humor and an eclectic set of citations. He will undoubtedly make one or two references you will be compelled to Google.

EXAMPLES. The book starts with a breakdown of an app. You get right into it which is gratifying. I find this approach immediately engaging and helpful. You get your money's worth of insights in the first few pages.

What could be better

FINALS. The author makes the point several times that you don't have to be an artist. I think that's fine for the sticky pad examples (rather good actually) but not for the screenshots of the 'improved' comps. I feel like some of the after images could have used a visual artist to really shine.

DATED. Some of the iOS references already feel dated with the iOS7 release recently announced. You really can't get around this problem in books, but it might be nice to state once in while what version of iOS he's referring to. Apple is a design monolith but a changing one.

DEFINITION. Define anti-pattern sooner. I tweeted the author because I felt that the antipattern term was used before it was ever defined. While the definition may seem obvious I appreciate how quickly he responded and what he said, An antipattern is "basically something that a lot of people do but is generally a bad idea. "

I am about a third of the way through the book so this is by no means an exhaustive list. I think the last point is key. The author invites reader into community, is accessible and gives a bunch of stuff on his website like articles and code.

If you are a UX designer, developer, product manager or visual designer, get this book and develop a common vocabulary you can use to communicate with your peers. Get more, done faster and look smarter too.

Great author, great book, great content
By Alan Millar
I just got out of an 8 hour course called Android Design Patterns: Interaction Design Solutions for Developers at SXSW Interactive. Greg covered a huge swath of mobile patterns and anti-patterns using content that he noted was also in the book. It was clear that the class could not cover everything that is covered in the book. And while it is called Android Design Patterns, Greg provides many examples from iOS and notes which is a better pattern, and when to borrow from examples that originated in one or the other to improve your designs in either system. Greg was a tireless and committed instructor and I'm sure I'll be as impressed with his book as I was with his seminar, which was worth the $800 price of the entire conference.

No Matter the Wreckage, by Sarah Kay

Following the success of her breakout poem, "B", Sarah Kay, in collaboration with illustrator Sophia Janowitz, releases her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. No Matter the Wreckage presents readers with new and beloved poetry that showcases Kay's talent for celebrating family, love, travel, and unlikely romance between inanimate objects ("The Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire"). Both fresh and wise, Kay's poetry allows readers to join her on the journey of discovering herself and the world around her. It is an honest and powerful collection.

Raw, honest, and beautiful poetry.
By Theresa
Sarah Kay is best known for her spoken word poetry and her famous Ted talk. As a huge fan of her, I was worried that her spoken word poetry wouldn't translate well to the page. I was completely wrong. These poems are absolutely beautiful on the page - raw and honest. There's such a wide range of topics - family, friends, loved ones, history. There's poems that I recognize from her spoken word videos and ones that are entirely new to me and more typical for print poetry. There are long poems and short ones, but all the poems pack an emotional punch. Like her spoken word, the poems in "No Matter the Wreckage" are sweet and quiet, but behind them there is heartbreak, family history, abuse, mentions of politics, and so, so much heart. They may come in a pretty wrapper, but make no mistake - Sarah Kay's work is not to be underestimated. "No Matter the Wreckage" has given me chills, and I recommend it to everyone.

Wonderful collection of poetry
By Katharine Ransom
In high school, I had a few negative experiences interpreting poetry and cast the subject aside until I saw Sarah Kay’s TED Talk from March 2011. She recited a poem, called B, about her hopes and dreams for her future daughter, that instantly brought tears to my eyes. From then on, I was hooked and had to read the rest of the author’s poetry. No Matter the Wreckage is a collection of 61 poems, all beautifully written and poignant. The author discusses her summer vacations at beaches on Long Island, her trips to India to visit her mother’s family, her father’s career as a photographer, and her experiences growing up in New York City. Her poetry is beautiful because the reader feels as though they are in the moment the author is describing; the reader can feel the emotions written on the pages.
There are, also, poems describing female liberation; from gender stereotypes, from relationships that did not work, from ideas about how a woman is supposed to live. There is a sincerity and quiet feminism in the poems pertaining to the author’s encounters with men. She approaches the situations from a place of wonder and hope: this is most readily displayed in The Type. Overall, this collection is a lovely read and brings much pause for reflection. It is not the type of collection to speed read or gloss over; but, perfect for a late Spring day in the shade of an oak tree. I highly recommend this book for those who feel apprehensive towards poetry and those who want to expand their knowledge of young poets.

I cried three times in one morning it was so good.
By Shawn
Got it last weekend. I read the entire book from the time I woke up until noon over my coffee and bagel. Gorgeous writing. I almost never cry (dog movies and the first 15 minutes of UP), but I cried three times reading it. I'm going to do it again soon, and this time make notes in the margin. The mixture of truth, heartache and so... so much hope I found deeply moving. I was just disappointed I didn't have more of it to read! I really just can't say enough good things about this. I've never even particularly been that much of a fan of poetry, tending towards being a reader of stories, more then things like this. It was just absolutely shocking in it's beauty. I may start giving it away as gifts to the people I love.
